What Are the Graphic Design Career Options?

Graphic designers have a wealth of new opportunities opening up in the workplace. The importance of web usage in business today has put virtually every operating concern in need of some sort of employee or consultant who can assemble a good graphics and / or multimedia driven web page.

Career oriented graphics designers today need a bachelor's degree. It is required for most entry level jobs. Graphic designers bring creativity and imagination to their work, but they must also bring a mastery of the tools, and those tools include sophisticated software programs and computer techniques as well as paper and drawing utensils. Computers are use to generate images, animation and multimedia presentations. It takes a lot of study to master the programs in use today and to keep up with the constant changes in graphic design technology.

There are several major business functions that require the services – and sometimes the leadership – of a graphics designer. In general, the use of graphics and multimedia is only expanding as more communications options are brought into the marketplace, such as the social networks and now the rapidly improving platforms for mobile devices.

Graphics design is at the heart of every advertising agency's products. It is one of the principal job sources for graphics professionals. Sometimes a graphics designer comes up with a design for an ad, but often the designer is also responsible for color, animation if needed, sound, shading and other effects. For ad campaigns, an account manager may want storyboards for presentation of an ad campaign's conceptualization and it is the graphic designer's job to prepare those, either on paper or as a digital slide show.

Graphic designers are also the anchor talent in many web development and design businesses . It is in this environment that the importance of understanding computer software for multimedia use becomes crucial. Web sites have become critical to all types of businesses, from small retailers to major corporations. Web presentations may include sketches and well lit photographs, or elaborate video presentations, or anything in between.

The video game business uses graphic artists and multimedia professionals in game development. In these environments, a graphic designer may work with a computer programmer on an animation scene and focus on such issues as shading, character movement and simulated lighting in the scene.

Over twenty five percent of all graphic designers are self employed . People who contract out their services may work for advocates who need graphic presentations, for publishing houses, for real estate firms, for fashion designers, for architectural forms or for sign companies . These are a few examples of businesses that occasionally need the services of a graphics designer. Many professionals become specialists in one business sector or another; and build a clientele based on recommendations. …

Medical Billing Careers

There are a number of fields in medical career where one can specialize: Master of Healthcare Administration, RN to BS in Nursing, BS in Health Administration, Doctor of Health Administration, MS in Nursing / MBA / Health Care Management, Healthcare Management, Medical Office Billing and Coding Specialist, Patient Care Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Assisting, and Medical Insurance Billing/Coding.

One of the most important careers is medical billing. Medical billing requires a lot of hard work and a broad knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, proper form completion, and required coding. Not only this, a biller has to have the knowledge for basic computer information and should have a typing speed of at least 35 words per minute.

A good temperament is another important thing that a medical biller ought to have. He is supposed to interact not only with the patients and their relatives, but also with their colleagues, doctors, medical representatives, medical professionals and other office personnel. For the billers, the basics of customer service are quite important.

However, medical billing and its related occupations are one of the fastest-growing fields in health care. Insurance companies and the government are investing a lot of time and money in order to catch fraud, abusive practices, and medical necessity issues. Therefore, the importance of the medical billers and coders is on the rise.

It is not always the case that a medical biller has to wait for a company to hire him. A medical biller is also able to work independently out of his home. This can be achieved if a biller sets up an electronic billing system through his home computer(s). Specialization in insurance billing is another field that can prove to be lucrative for billers. This is a position of self-employment through which a biller can render great assistance to the patients, and understand their insurance bills and what they should be paying.…

Where to Find Ultrasound Technician Schools in Ontario, Canada

Ultrasound is a highly successful field all over Canada and it will probably remain this way for a long, long time. However, ultrasound schools in Ontario are few and hard to find. Let me help you find Ultrasound Technician Training in Ontario, Canada and become a part of this successful field. But first, let me answer a few basic questions.

What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves reflecting off of internal body parts to create images for medical examination.

It is mostly used to check the baby inside the mother before it is born. It is also used to identify pathologies such as gallstones, kidney stones, cancers, hematomas and tumors.

How much do Ultrasound Technicians near Toronto make?

Ultrasound technicians (aka Ultrasonologists) are the people responsible for operating ultrasound machines that create the digital images used to visualize the internal body parts.

Compared to other branches of medicine, this field is not very competitive in Ontario and an Ultrasonologist working in the Toronto Area now earns an average annual salary of $50,572. Half of those in this position would earn between $40,898 and $76,546 (the 17th and 67th percentiles). These numbers are derived from area-specific government survey data.

So as you can see, it is well paying!

Where Do I Find Ultrasound Technician Schools in Ontario?

Well, you have a few options.

1) If you have the money and the required prerequisites, you can choose to go to an established Ultrasound Institute in Ontario, this can take anywhere from 2-3 years. The costs can be around $2000-4000 per year depending on which University to go to. Due to long waiting lists, you may not find entry easily. The only well-known university offering a Post Diploma Ultrasound program in Ontario is Michener Institute.

So what are your alternatives?

2) The other way, and the one that I suggest is learning Ultrasound from an instructor who has experience teaching Ultrasound but is not necessarily working as part of an Institute. Why do I suggest this? Don’t you have to go to a certified institution? The answer, plain and simple is NO.

As long as you have the right skills, many ultrasound clinics will hire you as a “trainee-ultrasonogist” without requiring any special certification. After working with such clinics for about a year, you will be eligible for writing your ARDMS examination and becoming a licensed ultrasonogist. This process can take as little as 1 year and 4 months of study and as little as $1500 in investment.

Where do I find such an Instructor?

The one that I personally recommend if you are looking for Ultrasound Technician Schools near Toronto is the Mainz Ultrasound Training (located in Mississauga).

UPDATE: Mainz Ultrasound has recently changed their prerequisites to only accept students who already have some ultrasound background.

Why should you choose Mainz Ultrasound? Here’s a few reasons:

1. There are no difficult prerequisites -> Easy admission

2. It is very inexpensive compared to other options

How To Find Public Speaking Engagements And Become Successful In Your Career

How many new customers or clients do you want to attract this year? Well, I have found that using public speaking is a very effective marketing tool that can bring in new business.

So, if public speaking is so effective, why isn’t everyone using public speaking to attract new customers and clients? Here, there are two main reasons: 1. People haven’t learned how to overcome their fear of public speaking. 2. Nobody ever told them that public speaking was a great way to find new customers. So, they never bothered to use it.

Now there are “four main tips” that will help you become a confident speaker. Who gets speaking engagements:

Tip #1

“Goals” – Determine what specific goal you want to achieve by giving many speeches. – Example: Perhaps you want to attract 100 new customers or clients in the next twelve months.. Also, by choosing a specific goal, you will find it easier to determine the number of speeches you will need to give to attain your goals. I have found that most speakers should give between 50 to 150 speeches per year. This will help them attain their goals.

Tip #2

“Have A Slow And Safe Way To Practice Your Speeches”. – Most speech classes or training groups tend to have you give a long speech to a group of people. This is not an effective training method. It is better to let people feel safe and develop slowly by giving short speeches of a one minute or two minute duration. When the new speaker feels more confident, they will then be eager to try a five minute or ten minute speech. So, let each person develop at their own pace. Many shy people, have overcome their fear of public speaking, by using this kind of “slow and safe” method. – Eventually, they will be excited about giving a 30 minute speech.

Tip #3

“Willingness To Give Speeches” – I find that most new speakers have not committed to giving a certain amount of speeches each year. When I ask them if they are willing to give one speech each week for the next four weeks, they usually will not commit to it. So, if they will not give speeches for the next four weeks, then they definitely will not commit to giving 50 speeches in a one year period. On the other hand, there are speakers who are excited about achieving their goals and they commit to giving over 100 speeches each year.

So, start slowly, and see if you are willing to give 50 speeches in the next 12 months. I think that you will get more excited about giving speeches, as you find that public speaking is helping you achieve your goals.

Tip #4

“Knowing How To Make A Profit From Your Speeches” – Here are some questions that you will need to ask yourself:

1. How do I find 50 speaking engagements each year?

2. How do I give speeches for free, in order …

Shiraz Vs Syrah – What’s the Difference?

As if ordering and tasting wine at your favorite restaurant isn’t anxiety-provoking enough, many wine drinkers still haven’t the slightest idea what the difference is between Shiraz and Syrah.

Let me tell you: They both are made from the same grape. The Syrah grape.

If all the past confusion about your favorite red wine has now got you into a heated tizzy, you can set your blame on James Bubsy, a young British Viniculturist who settled in New South Wales, Australia, in the early 1830’s. With him, he brought vines of the Syrah plant from France, intent on planting them in the fertile soil of the land down under.

In Busby’s book, Journal of a Recent Visit to the Principal Vineyards of Spain and France,” published in 1833, he references the book “Oenologie Francaise,” stating, “… The name of this grape is spelt Scyras; and it is stated that, according to the tradition of the neighbourhood, the plant was originally brought from Shiraz in Persia, by one of the hermits of the mountain.”

That the Syrah grape was brought to France from Persia, however, is just legend.

In 1999, when Dr. Carole Meredith, head of Viniculture and Enology at The University of California, Davis, performed DNA testing on the Syrah grape, she proved that it is actually a genetic mix of two different grape varieties: Dureza, a dark-skinned grape, and the Mondeuse Blanche, a white-skinned grape, both hailing from the Northern Rhone Valley in the southeast of France. They found no genetic linkage to Persia.

Syrah was becoming the dominating grape variety in Australia, and it wasn’t long before it became referred to as its name of supposed historical origin, based on the books Busby was publishing in Australia at the time regarding viniculture and winemaking. One likely reason was to differentiate it from the French wines which the grape bears its original geography but differs greatly concerning flavor and body when grown in the Southern Hemisphere.

A major part of this difference is due to Australia’s warm climate. Shiraz wines give way to intensely deep, bold, fruity flavors, quite different from the traditional French Syrah wines which have a much drier and lighter body. This designation has come in handy since Syrah is now grown all over the world. You might find a California winery that produces Syrah and Shiraz. Both grapes are grown and treated differently to express the flavors of the traditional French Syrahs and the more modern Australian styles.

Now, you may be wondering, “What the heck, then, is Petite Sirah?”

Do the Aussies call it “Petite Shiraz?” Why isn’t it called Syrah?

The creator of what those outside of France call Petite Sirah, was a French Nurseryman named Dr. Francoise Durif, who was trying to breed Syrah grapes with the Peloursin variety to create a grape that would be resistant to mildew. What was born was a grape he named after himself: The Durif grape.

While this grape is hardly grown anymore in France, it’s …

4 Excellent Films Commemorating the Battle of Little Big Horn

In honor of June 26, we would like to recommend the following historically “accurate” films: Son of the Morning Star, Little Big Man, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and American Experience’s Emmy award winning documentary Last Stand at Little Big Horn

Between June 25 and 26, 1876, a combined force of Lakota and Northern Cheyenne led the United States 7th Cavalry into a battle near the Little Bighorn River in what was then the eastern edge of the Montana Territory. The engagement is known by several names: the Battle of Greasy Grass, the Battle of Little Big Horn, and Custer’s Last Stand. Perhaps the most famous action of the Indian Wars, it was a remarkable victory for Sitting Bull and his forces. They defeated a column of seven hundred men led by George Armstrong Custer; five of the Seventh’s companies were annihilated and Custer himself was killed in the engagement along with two of his brothers and a brother-in-law. Known as the battle that left no white survivors, Little Big Horn has inspired more than 1,000 works of art, including over 40 films. Here are four of the best…

Son of the Morning Star

Based on the 1984 best selling historical novel by Evan S, Connell, Son of the Morning Star won five Emmys when it first aired in 1991. Focusing on the life and times of General George Armstrong Custer, it takes up Custer’s life near the end of the American Civil War, follows him through his involvement in famous Indian wars, and culminates with the battle of Little Big Horne. I particularly like this version because it attempts to get beyond the stereotypes and introduce you to the real man; it provides an excellent introduction to the personalities involved and the events leading up to and following the battle.

Little Big Man,

The 1970 film Little Big Man, directed by Arthur Penn and starring Dustin Hoffman, was based on Thomas Berger’s 1964 fictionalized “historical” novel by the same name. Admittedly adjusted history, it tells the satirical, fictional and picaresque story of Jack Crabb; a white boy orphaned in a Pawnee raid and adopted by a Cheyenne warrior, he eventually becomes the only white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn. It is considered a “Revisionist Western” because Native Americans receive a sympathetic treatment that was uncommon for Western films in previous decades. Revisionist or not, I simply adore this wickedly humorous film about one man’s life revolving through the kaleidoscope of cultures that made up the American “Wild” West, and I recommend it with all my heart.

Bury My heart at Wounded Knee,

HBO’s 2007 adaptation of Bury My heart at Wounded Knee, a 1970 classic of Native American history by Dee Alexander Brown, recounts the struggle of the Indian Wars from the perspectives of three people: Charles Eastman, a young Sioux doctor who received his medical degree from Boston University in 1889; Sitting Bull, who led the combined forces at Little Big Horn and refused …

The University Cafeteria

Cafeterias and restaurants are important in university campuses. The largest Cafeteria of the university designed for use by staff, students and visitors is generally the most visited component of a university. It is also a place where students and faculty can take their visitors for a brief coffee break or a lunch hour visit. A well-designed Central cafeteria, housed perhaps in the student center adds to functional efficiency of the university. For here, the lunch hour can be combined with a visit to the bank, post office and the book store along with a friendly exchange of words with colleagues, fellow students, visitors, staff and faculty who may be visiting the same building at the same time. Universities where such centers are not common would do well to plan for it on their campuses.

As mentioned, the ideal location for the central cafeteria of a university is the student center. The student center building containing the cafeteria, along with the administration building can easily be designed as the two largest buildings on a university campus because of their central and essential functions. Both of these buildings need to be accessed from the academic departments as well as by outsiders and vehicles. Therefore, their placement in the university in conjunction with parking areas and the university boulevard has to be incorporated in the master plan. The best location for a student center on a campus is a location close to the administration building but towards the student residential area. It must also be close to the University Boulevard and Visitors Parking area. The building needs to be surrounded by lawns and gardens containing benches for sitting.

The university cafeteria needs to be spacious not just because of the large number of its visitors but also because spacing between tables should ideally be much more than the spacing between tables in an ordinary restaurant. Students often use these tables to read or complete an assignment along with a snack, lunch or dinner. The acoustic design of a university cafeteria should be such as to minimize noise level. Using non-reflecting wall coverings and providing sections of the cafeteria that can be opened to surroundings during busy hours takes care of this need. Music may never be permitted inside a university cafeteria for the same reason. Other sound proof sections of the student center can be designed to permit music.

It may be mentioned that a university cafeteria needs to serve nutritious food at subsidized rates. Its primary clients are students, who are not earning members of society. Two different models for running such cafeterias are prevalent. In the first one, the university gives out a contract to a private caterer. In the second, the university runs its own food services department and runs the cafeteria by hiring the required staff. Both models have inherent limitations. When services are contracted out to a private caterer he gets an assured and captive clientele without having to face competition of the open market. This can, and …

Relying on Faith – Believing That It's Possible to Find a Career Outside of the Law

It can be so disabling to realize that you do not want to practice law anymore. You think, "I've got a prestigious, steady job making six figures. And that makes you feel guilty and ungrateful. So you try to go back to your work and ignore the dissatisfaction. But the feelings will not go away.

You realize that for some people, work is about having money to support a family or prestige or intellectual challenge. But that's not all you want from your work. You've always wanted work that makes you look forward to Monday mornings. You've tried pretending you're one of those this-job-is-just-a-job people, but you still feel those little stirrings of unrest in your soul. You think, "There has to be more to life than this."

I know these doubts are frightening but they serve another important purpose: they bring hope. Hope that there is more out there than going to a job that makes you miserable. That hope will help you begin your journey of figuring out what's important to you and make the choice to go after it, no matter what. You begin acting as if you know the life and work you want are out there. And hope becomes faith that the life and work you want are out there. You begin to rely on that faith.

What is it like to rely on faith? It's watching other people settle and thinking, "That's not for me anymore." It's knowing that God put you here on earth for a purpose and that He wants you to use the talents that He gave you. It's the random moments of joy when you experience some clarity. It's believing that your small steps are always going to snowball into you walking out of the firm into a life and work that fulfill you.

It's not easy. There are some hard moments when you think, "Nothing's happening, nothing's changing." But you do not really believe that. Otherwise, you would have given up. That little flicker of hope is hard to snuff out.

Feel that little flicker. Whisper to yourself, "I do not know where I'm going with this, but I know it's going to take me some place magical." Keep saying it to yourself as you have a new idea about what would fulfill you, as you reach out to someone new who can show you the way, as you try something new. Rely on faith.
