The Narcotics Officer Career

Although depressing, it is important we remind ourselves of the dangers the drug trade brings. This allows us to look at the problem from an ‘eyes wide shut’ perspective. In other words, we can be mindful of the dangers when we are aware of them. Perhaps, we may even take the effective steps to make a positive difference. A career as a narcotics officer can help make such a difference.

The term “narcotics officer” can be a rather open one. There are many different types of narcotics officers that work in many different federal agencies. For those weighing their options for such a career, the best place to start would be to look towards the prime agencies that deal with narcotics crimes.

The most obvious agency would be the DEA since it solely deals with drugs as its primary investigative capacity. However, the FBI, ATF, and even the US Marshals will handle tasks associated with enforcing the drug laws. How they do so may be a little different.

The US Marshals may be involved with tracking down the fugitives that are on the run for drug crimes. The FBI could invest an enormous amount of time seeking to bring a federal indictment against a mob boss for operating a drug syndicate. Such an investigation could potential take years upon years. Such work is not for naught. Some of these lengthy investigations have brought down some of the most infamous organized crime figures in history.

The work performed by various narc officers can be highly involved and complicated. In some instances, an agent may spend a great time in the field performing arrests. Some officers might even go on deep undercover missions. Then, there are those that perform a tremendous amount of investigation work at their desk. And some might lay in wait for tips to help further investigations or launch arrests.

For many, the way in which you would launch your potential narcotics officer career would begin with acquiring the appropriate level of education. A High School diploma is a must. However, an advanced college degree is certainly helpful to further your hiring options.

What can your degree be in?

There is tremendous variety available in terms of the options you can explore. Degrees in law, criminal justice, and communications are commonly those most associated with this profession. Yet, there really is no definitive single degree that is a “must”. Those with degrees in such areas as diverse as language studies to physical education have landed careers as a narc officer.

While there are many different agencies that serve different purposes, it is wise to apply for as many different agencies as possible. Such narcotics officer positions are highly competitive and it is vital to keep as many employment options open as possible.

Ultimately, if you were to truly answer what a narcotics officer career entails, the answer would be that such a career entails keeping the public safe. No matter what agency you would work for and in what …

How to Take Your SAT Exam – It's All About Attitude

Whether your SAT test preparation consists of working on your own, in a group or class, or one-to-one with a qualified SAT tutor, a good attitude will help you get a higher score. Of course a positive attitude does not give you more knowledge but it does make taking the test less stressful. Stress makes you too tired to think clearly. Stress can actually make you forget what you know.

Play the SAT game

Playing a game is less stressful than taking a test. Games are usually great attitude boosters. So thinking of the SAT's and PSAT's as helps you keep the pressure off yourself. In fact, if you think about it, doing SAT / PSAT questions is a lot like doing puzzle games like the places on placemats in fast food restaurants. It goes without saying that you'd rather eat your burger than doing placemats puzzles, but other than that, they're interesting, and maybe even fun.

Play the SAT sport

Maybe thinking of the SAT's as a game is not quite enough. If you're still getting upset when you miss a bunch of questions, think about your favorite sport. Now think of the SAT game as your latest favorite sport. When the questions get really hard, you can consider them a move in your sport as opposed to a difficult question. Here's how it helps. While winning in a sport is important, it would not be fun for you to play against a team of 4th graders. You've always win. Too little challenge and the game's not fun anymore. Fun games are those where you get some points, then your opponent gets some, then you. If you can get into this mindset, missing a question is not so awful. The sport mindset helps keep you from dragging yourself down when you miss questions. Remember, negative thoughts cause stress which can cause you to miss questions you know. So instead of being mad at yourself, think about your loss in more positive ways. Praise your opponent – he guy who wrote the question. Think to yourself, "Good for you. You got me on that one." Certainly a better choice than thinking "I'm so stupid." You can even give your opponent a not-so-polite nickname.

Boost your attitude

Professional educators write the SAT and PSAT questions. Do not believe the rumors that test questions are written by high school and college kids for summer jobs. It's not true and only makes you feel worse when you miss questions. One last attitude booster: Get plenty of rest the night before the test. Eat breakfast that has more protein than donuts and drink lots of water. If you're sleepy, hungry, or dehydrated, your attitude can go right down the drain. Good luck! …

What You Should Know About ACT

There comes a time in every college bound person's life when they ask the questions "What is the ACT and how does it affect my future"?

A national college admission examination, the ACT consists of subject area tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science plus an optional writing exam.

Originally, "ACT" stand for American College Testing. However, in 1996 the official name of the organization was shorted to simply "ACT" to better reflect the broad array of programs and services offered beyond college entrance testing.

There are three good reasons to take the ACT:

1. The ACT tests are universally accepted for college admission.

2. The ACT is not an aptitude or an IQ test. Instead, the questions on the ACT are directly related to high school courses in English, mathematics, and science.

3. In addition to the tests, the ACT also provides test takers with a unique interest inventory that provides valuable information for career and educational planning and a student profile section that provides a comprehensive profile of high school work and future plans.

In the US, the ACT is administrated on five national test dates in October, December, February, April, and June. In selected states, the ACT is also offered in late September.

The ACT tests are prepared according to the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association, & National Council on Measurement in Education (1985); Code of Professional Responsibilities in Educational Measurement, National Council on Measurement in Education (1995); and Code of Fair Testing Practices in Education, Joint Committee on Testing Practices (1988).

People of all ages and grade levels are eligible to take the ACT. This includes junior high or middle school students and those who have already graduated from high school.

The test includes 215 multiple-choice questions in four subject areas: English-75 questions; Math-60 questions; Reading-40 questions; and Science-40 questions. Plus one writing prompt in the optional writing portion.

There are no limits on how many times you can take the ACT, although there are restrictions on how frequently you can do so. For example, you can test only once per national or state test date, or if you test through non-national testing such as special testing, you must wait a minimum of 60 days between retests. Many students take the test twice, once as a junior and again as a senior.

You should definitely consider retesting if you had any problems during the test, such as misunderstanding the directions or not feeling well. You may also want to consider retesting if you are not satisfied that your scores accurately represent your abilities.

Retesting may be a good idea if you see a discrepancy between your ACT scores and your high school grades, or if you have completed coursework or an intensive review in the subject areas included in the ACT since you were tested. Research shows that of the students who took the ACT more than once 55% increased their Composite score on the retest. If you …

The Need For Work Experience

Companies are not just looking for good grades and extra-curricular activity, but a sufficient amount of work experience. They want to know that you’ve worked somewhere else, have done a great job, and have good references. This is how they figure out if you really are as bright and talented as your resume suggest and there really is no litmus test like real world experience for an employee.

Finding a job will take much less time if your references are actual professionals in your field that you have personally worked for than if your references are your grandma and your best friend. Work experience is really the only way to get this. It will also help you qualify for more positions with your level of education and get you into an interview faster. Experience impresses human resource managers because it shows that graduates have a passion for their line of work and have already been broken in by another company.

Work experience will also set you up to make a higher salary or hourly wage for your first job. Many places will ask for so many years of education or applicable work experience. This means that you may qualify for that sales job without an associate in business if you’ve spent several years in a sales position and have proven your worth at your previous company. You will find that there are industries where work experience means more than education ever could even though your parents may have told you that college was the only way to get anywhere in any industry. This could actually save you money as tuition costs are rising well beyond affordable levels and with state budget deficits, it is likely that state-funded schools will keep up this trend.

Students do have the option of internships. Many schools will work directly with you and a company to help you find the best internship possible. Some internships will pay a wage to their students but some highly-demanded internships are volunteer and will pay you nothing. If you do not have the funds to live in a new location and work for free, you might have to sacrifice that dream internship with one that pays well but isn’t exactly what you wanted.

Volunteer service is another option if you do not have the option of doing an internship and you are having a hard time finding a job. This will help you give back to your community, and if you have found a fitting volunteer position for your field, you will have applicable experience and good references.

Work experience should not just be considered a way to get your foot in the door but an opportunity to grow as an employee. You will find that in your next job, you will be able to get on your feet faster and make a bigger impact on the company. New college graduates will learn how to work in different environment and your next employer will be impressed. Work experience can …

How to Help Your Kids Become Self-Confident, Happy and Passionate

Thinking back to our school days, we were taught various subjects, given a bit of guidance about what career we should follow and that's about it. There were not, and still are not, any excellent coaching programs in school unless you're an athlete.

Furthermore, with recent UK government policy suggesting that all young people should have a coach or mentor, it's difficult to see how this would work in practical terms.

This situation continues to be of concern since the education sector continues to cut budgets and careers services.

During my teaching career I've never seen or experienced how schools, colleges and universities and, for that matter, workplaces tap into the root passions that we are all born with.

Imagine if the education system tapped into our core passions and promoted educational subjects around those passions instead of trying to pigeonhole everyone?

Having worked with thousands of young people, my purpose in life is to inspire and support parents, guardians and those who meet young people to coach them towards a life and career filled with purpose and have fun doing it. That is the reason why I've written this article.

I love what I do because of the results I get working with both adults and young people. I see people's eyes light up when they realize what's possible and they see a future for themselves. This is particularly important for what we describe as the lost generation of children.

With young people I love to see them discover what they want to do in life as this helps them focus on their choice of studies. What's your story going to be?

So, let's get down to it.

I'd like to help you to discover your child's purpose in life and potentially your own – are you ready? Remember that these exercises are best done with young people age 14+ as this is the time when the family unit starts to think about further education at college and university. In addition, this exercise is equally valuable for your older children age 18+, with or without help.

Without a purpose in life, it's easy to get sidetracked or lost. It's therefore easy to wander and drift and accomplish little in life. I've known hundreds of students like this who have attended college and university without any idea of why they are there or what they want to accomplish in life.

To start with try to chat with young people in an informal environment – do not sit them down and start grilling them because they'll just walk off – usually!

As a career coach I use The Jack Canfield Success Principles and one of the most important places to start is to ask the young people in your household this question.

Ask them "What do you want?" The first thing that will happen is that the young person will either a) start talking or writing things down or 2) say "I do not know and shake their shoulders".

So the …

How Long Do You Have to Ignore a Guy Before He Misses You! Here is What You Should Be Doing

It kills women all over the world to always be the one to tell the guy she misses him. And what’s a guy’s usual reaction? He seems to be untouched by it. Women always ask why they always have to be the ones looking desperate. Can the tables be turned? Here are some “hold off” tactics that you can do in order to make this guy miss you terribly:

Appear too busy to answer his calls or e-mails

Whenever he calls, let the call go to voice mail then listen to him as he stammers his hello. Get busy with something else. Do not reply to his text messages as well. Try your best to keep your silence. This won’t be difficult, especially if you know that eventually, he would go crazy and would show up right at your doorstep.

Do not make yourself available each and every time

Each time he asks you to go out, tell him you already have plans. The next time he asks you out again, tell him you have a date with your girlfriends. Play your role to a T, make him wonder why you’re not peeing in your pants to see him.

When he leaves a message on your machine, call him back 3 days after

Three days might just be the time you need for him to miss you. Make sure he doesn’t hear from you in those three days. This is the most acceptable time for you to make him wonder why you still aren’t calling and whether you’re alright.

If he is always taking you for granted, ignore him for two weeks

If you are the one who’s always asking him if he wants to go out, or if you are the only one making an effort to make the relationship work, be a no-show for two whole weeks. This would catch him off guard and, hopefully, he’ll be the one to make the effort to be with you once more.

Do not waste your time just waiting for him

You cannot just simply mope around, waiting for your phone to ring. You need to keep yourself busy because waiting around for him wouldn’t do you much good. You could spend your time being with your friends or even working out.

Resist the temptation of getting in touch with him

Try to put in a little more hours on your work. Not only will this keep you from dialing his number but it also would do wonders for your career.

If you want him to miss you, ignore him when you see him around

Whenever you see him around, say in the office or in school, ignore him. For a few days, appear as if you don’t care whether you see him or not. The time apart wherein you two don’t talk should make him miss you.…

Re-Discovering Socrates: Conversations To Learning

The evolution of the educational and training sector has condemned in organizing the delivery of its services in ways that often misaligns with the needs and preferences of adult learners. This misalignment fails to engage participants in active learning , thereby underlining the intent of the very process, itself. An alternative approach re-passages the Socratic dialectic, wherein conversations become the engine leading to learning. This also has important implications for managers to consider when training their employees.

Background

Learning can involve the acquisition of information, the discovery of knowledge, the mastery of a skill, and / or the adaptation of deliberate behaviors. With any given topic, there is an intense body of knowledge and a variety of optimistic theories, models and approaches, as well as contradiction expertise.

Having extensively studied a particular subject area, the teacher or trainer then organizes the relevant materials into a rational sequence. But because there is so much important information to disseminate and, conversely, limitations on the time in which to do it, teachers / trainers often close to a pedagogical methodology – a system intended to fill each participant's tabula rasa with precious packets of learning.

In such circumstances, the environment is not participant-focused, since it is the teacher / trainer who controls the information, the content delivery and the allocation of time. This creates order and security for the teacher / trainer, but may result in isolating the participants who can become totally disengaged and alienated. This is our story.

Student Council Leaders

There are student councils, boards or associations at Ontario's colleges and they are supported directly by student fees. The fees contribute to ancillary college operations, as well as activities and services delivered by the staff of the student councils.

Students run for council leadership positions for any variety of reasons. Although they generally are enthusiastic and well-meaning, their lack of leadership experience severely challenges their abilities to manage through alien situations and dynamics.

Suddenly immersed in a high-demand environment, student council leaders are confronted by the need to:

• Demonstrate leadership
• transform the board into a team
• set goals and priorities
• overse financial accountability
• manage conflict and performance
• direct staff

A lack of continuity from one year's board to the next further impaired transit considerations, resulting in repeated "start / stop" performance. As well, most student leaders participate in their council for only one or two years, resulting in a near-continuous turn-over. In the past, student council leaders were stranded on their own to work through such issues, with varying degrees of success.

The College Student Alliance

The College Student Alliance (CSA) is a member-driven provincial association, representing 23 student councils at 16 of Ontario's colleges, encompassing over 125,000 full-time students. These student councils are responsible for managing a combined budget of $ 56 Million, annually. In 2007, CSA entered into a partnership with Diamond Management Institute to deliver leadership training to student leaders from across the province in four workshops throughout the year. This …
