Want An Effortless Education? Travel Often

Whether you are an adventurous traveler who scales mountains and hikes through jungles or you are a lover of creature comforts who lives for five star hotels, travel will teach you some of life's great lessons. It does not matter if you were born a beach bum or are an art enthusiast travel will enrich your life.

Whether you prefer traveling in groups or going it alone, if you are a planner or spontaneous your life will benefit by traveling away from what you know. You do not have to go far, you may or may not cross oceans, take a plane, train or car the important thing is that you explore the world outside of your community.

What will you discover?

Look at the familiar through new eyes: Travel to a place you know well with someone who has never been there before. On a trip to Pittsburgh, where I grew up, my niece and her boyfriend showed me a city full of unique and charming old neighborhoods, museums dedicated to things such as ketchup, Andy Warhol and the birth of the labor movement. I also saw that the view of the three rivers from Mount Washington is as beautiful as any large city vista.

We are small: Walk through the redwood forests in California or hike through Rocky Mountain National Park and you will discover just how small we are.

There are more similarities than differences: Stand on the shore in Nova Scotia, Canada and then the coast of Brittany in France you will notice the similarities in the landscape and the people even though these two places are separated by an ocean.

You can be someone else: I have had people think I was Dutch in Lucca, Italy and Quito Ecuador, French in Venice and German in Rome. In fact the only place people absolutely know that I am American is in Canada. It is fun to play along and see where it takes you.

Food can be part of your adventure: You will find that pretty food is not always good and ugly food is not always bad. It is not the wine that is important it is the new and old friends that you share it with that is important.

You can be happier if you strike out on your own: If you are traveling with a group you do not need to do everything your companions do. Some people have an amazing capacity for art museums, others prefer churches and still others can walk without a break. After spending a week in France looking at buildings designed by the architect Corbusier, I finally rented a car and went to San Tropez. Everyone was happier after that.

Rain is beautiful too: The sun does not have to shine to make a place beautiful; standing in the rain in a rain forest is as beautiful as sitting in the sun in Portofino.

Beauty is all around you, just look and see: Treat yourself to the colors …

Some Interesting Rankings of MBA Programs

Many organizations, including business magazines, newspapers and Internet sites publish lists of Universities offering MBA programs that are supposedly the best in the country. If you compare such lists, you find that many of the same schools appear on them, although not ranked in the same order on all lists. These are usually schools with national reputations and their names are well known in many parts of the world. Sadly, excellent schools offering good MBA programs have no chance to be including in these rankings. Some of the schools not included may, in fact, be more suitable for some students than the nationally known schools.

If you attach too much credibility to rankings published by periodicals such as Bloomberg Business Week, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal, you may miss many opportunities to find an MBA program that fits your needs best. You must also understand that these lists rank the business school and not the school’s MBA program. Many schools offer full-time, part-time, and executive MBA classess. Distance Learning programs are now growing in popularity. A school’s full-time program may be taught by highly qualified professors while its part-time program is taught by adjuncts without terminal degrees.

It is interesting to look at the way MBA schools and programs rank if we compare them on a single characteristic such as student quality or starting salary of graduates. In this article we look at three rankings based on data reported by a large number of MBA schools.

The first ranking criterion is selectivity, or a measure of how many applicants are rejected by an MBA program. One must take this criterion with some skepticism. A school that rejects a large number of applicants because many of them are unqualified may rank higher than a school that rejects fewer applicants because it gets a small number of them but most are very good candidates. From a list of top 40 MBA programs out of 928 programs reporting as of January 2011, the first few most selective programs were:

Indian Institute of Technology’s Master of Management program – India – 99

University of Dhaka’s Full-Time MBA – Bangladesh – 97

Chaminade University of Honolulu’s MBA Evening Program – US – 95

National University of Singapore’s Part-Time MBA – Singapore -95

National University of Singapore’s The NUS MBA – Singapore -93

HFU Hochschule Furtwangen University’s Executive MBA – Germany -90

Lahore University of Management Sciences’s Full-Time program – Pakistan — 90

The two schools at the bottom of the list of 40 schools both ranked as #35 were

Simon Fraser University’s MBA – Canada – 75

TiasNimbas Business School’s 2-year Part-Time MBA – Netherlands – 75

A second ranking criterion is recruiting, the number of companies interviewing MBA students on campus prior to graduation. It is important to understand that a large number of recruiters does not mean a large number of job offers and a large number of interviews does not always mean talking to the best companies. A lot …

How To Decide On A Career

You should spend a good deal of your time understanding your strengths. Once you have figured out your talents and strengths you should try to find out what you want to do in life, which could utilize your strengths. It’s useless to choose a career that doesn’t use your strengths.

Thankfully, we all are equipped with some kind of natural talent. Some of us are good in communications, some are creative-minded, some are technical-minded, and some are good in mathematics. After figuring out your strengths you can decide about a career, which will take you to your dream destination.

If you are creative-minded then you may choose a career, which will suit your creative bent of mind. You may become a fashion designer, architect, web designer or graphic designer. If you are good in writing then you may choose to become a copy writer working for an advertising agency or can write a novel, hoping to become a best-selling writer with fame and money. Scientifically-minded people are advised to become an engineer or a doctor or a research scholar. People with communications skills are successful in sales and marketing related careers.

Many times parents decide about careers of their children without caring about interests and passions of their kids. Sometimes they are motivated by vague reasons. For example, I have seen many parents forcing their children to follow a profession, an uncle of the family had successfully pursued decades ago. They don’t realize that one person’s success in a profession doesn’t mean that everyone will be successful in that profession.

A person should choose his/her profession based on his/her interest. We should not be guided by how our relatives or friends are doing in that field.

Some people have natural talent to do a work easily compared to others. If you can sing well, play a game well or convince people easily then you have a natural talent that can be used to grow in your career. If you observe closely most people are gifted with one natural talent or the other. However, most people fail to recognize their talents. If you have a talent for anything, don’t waste it.

If you are able to do something better than others then you should realize it’s your strength. If you can talk publicly better than others, write better than others, sing better than others, or if you can play a musical instrument better than others then that’s your strength. Don’t waste it.

Many times you may not be able to recognize your strengths but other people may spot your talent. If people say that you have a certain talent or strength then you should take note of that. Finding natural talent or strength is not easy. So, if some other person finds your strength then you should value that.…

Key Qualities And Skills A Good Career Counselor Should Have

Nowadays, a lot of young people still have a hard time finding out which career path to take. They usually have a problem with this because their interests and skills set do not match. Or the teenager’s parents or whoever will be financially supporting their college education want them to take a course that unfortunately, they do not like or have an interest in.

In such instances, teenagers can benefit greatly by talking with and seeking advice from career counselors. These counselors specialize in helping point clients, especially young ones, in the right direction of finding the appropriate career path for them. They will assess their clients using certain tests and interviews to get an idea of where their talents or interests lie. After getting the results, they will make the suitable career suggestions depending on the answers the client gave during the testing and interviews.

The right career counselor to go to though should not just be competent in giving out tests and handling interviews. He or she should have certain key qualities and traits that should include the following:

A genuine interest in others and with helping them. A good career counselor should have the drive and energy to sit with people through their best and worst. He or she should be fully present when listening to their clients’ stories, however difficult or long they are. Keep in mind that a good career counselor should always have a sustained commitment to facilitating human-to-human connection and positive transformation.

Good listening skills. Effective listening is a key skill any counselor should have. A good career counselor should not only to listen to what is being said, but how it is said, why it is being said, and what it means in the context of a particular client. The ideal career counselor should also be able to listen “between the lines,” for those things that are not being said by the client. This is because what a client omits from a session can speak just as clearly as what is communicated out loud. In addition, a good counselor should know how to listen without passing judgment or evaluation.

Authenticity and accessibility. Lastly, a counselor should not only be accessible to their clients in order to gain their trust, but he or she needs to be genuine and empathetic as well when listening and communicating with the clients. The best career counselor should be adept at developing a genuine empathetic connection with each client so that the counseling process can move forward and the counselor-client relationship can become stronger and more effective.

3 Ways to Ensure Your Success in College Through Effective Home Time Management

Life Will not Stop Because You Need to Study!

Because of that, while there are many things you can do to make life easier while you're in college, getting your home under control will be one of the main ones. And that's especially true for nontraditional students. This article highlights 3 ways to ensure your success in college with effective home time management.

1.) Make Time for Studying / Research / Projects

Even though you have midterms coming up … let's face it … kids need help with homework, jelly needs mopped up off the floor, and laundry still needs washed (it's OK to look like you've been studying all week, but please do not smell like it). Not to mention these people expect food multiple times each day.

So, here's what I did … at the beginning of each semester I would take all of my syllabi and record all assignments, tests, and quizzes into my handy-dandy planner on both the monthly and weekly portions. That cave me, at a glance, a good look at what I had coming up for the following week and month.

With this information I could plan meals, housecleaning, and time with kids so that I got done what I needed to get done while ensuring I had adequate time for studying.

For instance, the Sunday before midterm week I may make a big pot of spaghetti sauce then plan menus for that week such as:

· Monday: Leftover spaghetti

· Tuesday: Lasagna (made ahead on Sunday)

· Wednesday: Leftover Lasagna

· Thursday: Shepherd's Pie (How long does it take to boil potatoes?)

· Friday: Chicken Parmesan (Crockpot)

· Sat: Pizza and vegging out on couch … cause I deserve it

Think about how much time that planning saved me … time that could then be redirected towards the major goal that week … Midterms.

2.) Make Time for Family

There are not a whole lot of things that can derail determination like guilt can.

Picture this … you've planned all week long to use Saturday to catch up on your studying. Saturday morning, however, Harmony wakes up and decides she wants more than anything else in the whole wide world to go to the park today … as a matter of fact, her life will be over if she can not. You … knowing you really need to study … do the responsible thing and say "No." This leads to intestinal guilt which not only lasts with you but magnifies to the point where you're not getting any studying accomplished anyway so you decide to go ahead and take Harmony to the park.

One way to make sure that this does not happen is to … again … look at the week ahead. You should be able to get a clear picture all that life will be throwing your way in the next 7 days. If it would help you while learning this new technique get … and make sure to use … …

Vanderbilt University (Vandy) Commodores Football Players Taken in the 2010 NFL Draft – 2 Selected

The Vanderbilt University (commonly referred to as Vandy) Commodores had two football players taken in the 2010 NFL Draft. The two men that were selected are:

  • Myron Lewis (cornerback) taken with in the third round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 67th overall pick
  • Thomas Welch (offensive tackle) selected by the New England Patriots with the 208th overall pick in the seventh round.

Myron Lewis is a 6’2″ 203 pound lock down cornerback that made a name for himself as one of the best secondary players in the highly competitive Southeastern Conference (SEC) that Vanderbilt plays in. Born in 1987 in Pompano Beach, Florida the defensive specialist was one of the best athletes on a Commodores team that went a meager 2-10 during his final year with the program in 2009.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers felt that they were getting a good value in picking up the talented corner in the third round. Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris hopes that taking Myron Lewis will prove to be a valuable asset for his defensive unit and anticipated the former Commodore to bring an increased level of speed, youth, and tenacity to his defense.

In the final round of the 2010 NFL Draft the New England Patriots chose Thomas Welch to add some more protection for future hall of fame quarterback Tom Brady. Welch brings a great deal of height to a strong Patriots offensive line that includes multiple pro bowlers. At 6’6″ and 310 pounds Thomas will be one of the tallest players on the roster.

Long before Thomas Welch was selected by the New England Patriots he used his large frame to excel at Brentwood High School in his birth city of Brentwood, Tennessee. Brentwood, Tennessee is a well to do suburb of Nashville, Tennessee so when it came time to move to college Welch only had to travel a few miles down the road to reach the Vanderbilt campus.

Playing at a lighter weight as a first year college student caused Thomas to originally join the Commodores as a tight end and red shirted at that position in 2005. During his first year of seeing the field in 2006 Welch was moved to the offensive line to compensate for injuries suffered by teammates that otherwise would have played the tackle position. During his junior season in 2008 Thomas started every game at right tackle and as a senior he moved to the more prestigious left tackle position and started at that spot for eleven games.…
