Choosing Your Major and Further: First Steps to Choosing a Career

Choosing what you are going to study at university is an important first step in building the stairs to a successful career. However, it is not the end of the world once you choose a major, and do not want to get a job that is offered to the graduates of that department. There are various opportunities even after you choose your major to give your career a new direction.

First of all, keep in mind that most companies today are very flexible with the major of their potential employees especially in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences. Of course, no company would like to give a Computer Engineering job to a Medicine graduate. But just because you have studied History, it does not mean you cannot work as a Public Relations Manager. The skills you have obtained from your major may seem useless once you decide to work at a relatively unrelated job, but nothing can be more deceiving. The skills that seem to be related only to your major are indeed to be used in a variety of fields, which you will discover as you work.

Let’s say you have recognized that you want to give your career a new direction in the first years of your undergraduate studies. This is good news. You can choose from a variety of alternatives depending on the options provided by your college. You may be transferred to another department, you may consider doing a Double Major, or you may add a Minor next to your Major degree. Of course, not all of these are offered at all colleges, neither are they available for all departments. However, you will definitely find an alternative that suits you, and shows you the exit out of the maze.

What if none of the alternatives above are available, or you have already finished your undergraduate studies? Then, there are still other options for you. One option is doing your Master’s in a field related to the new path you would like your career to take. You can discuss which Graduate Program would be the best with your professors at college, and also with your employers if you have had the chance to have any. If you do not have any work experience, talking to a potential employer could also benefit you in the same way. Other than looking for an appropriate Master’s Degree, you could also search for Certificate Programs. These programs are more direct and can add a lot to your existing skills. With these programs, you can have both a certificate in the hand and also a new feld of expertise, both of which will be of great use in your job applications.…

Awakening Required for American Workers – Both Mid-Career and New in the Workforce

"Today's college grads need to be aware that the rising trend in Silicon Valley is to evaluate employees every quarter, not annually. wait until the end of the year to figure out whether a team leader is doing a good job, "Thomas L. Friedman reported in an Op-Ed piece for The New York Times July 12, 2011.

Friedman goes on to point out that the fastest growing / very high valuation companies, such as Facebook at $ 100 billion, Twitter at $ 8 billion, Groupon at $ 30 billion, and LinkedIn at $ 8 billion, have much, much smaller workforces than traditional corporations of equal value. They are hiring new employees, but they are hiring primarily specialized technicians and engineers, and in small numbers compared to the brick and mortar companies of the past.

During the bloodbath (layoffs) of the past recession American worker productivity rose by 6% at the end of 2009 – a phenomenal increase. This was thought about by the remaining workers having to shoulder the additional workload of the laid off workers and because companies turned to new automation and outsourced functions that were less costly performed by other companies. The remaining workers were overworked but still happy to remain on payrolls, but now are antsy for new opportunities as there is a glimmer of hope the economy is improving.

Previously, students graduated from colleges having learned some fundamental skills and basically started their job searches with the expectation that an employer would hire them and train them – providing them with the opportunity to master the specific skills that they needed to perform the work required. Many thought companies "owed" them jobs for all of their hard work getting degrees. This is certainly not the case, as companies have a huge labor pool to choose from (there are approximately 5 people looking for each open job today).

For mid-career professionals downsized during the past recession, the skills that they have acquired over the years may no longer match the requirements of the current job market. In this situation re-training, specialized schooling, a change of careers, or even to start his or her own business may be an option. Keep in mind that small businesses have created two-thirds of all new jobs over the past two decades.

The old adage, "you've got to earn your job each day," is definitely a prescription for future employment stability. But it is much deeper than that. You've got to use your intelligence and do research to find what fields are growing, what companies are innovative and moving forward in the global economy, and which ones are hiring people with your skill set. If your skills do not exactly align with the job, it may be "close but no cigar!" You may have to acquire the skills through more schooling or specialized training, or accept a lower payment position that will allow you to learn the necessary skills. It is more important than ever to build a network of friends, …

Greek Licensing Protects – The Integrity & Reputation of the College Fraternity & Sorority System

Greek trademarks are registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office by the each organization to protect the integrity and ownership of their respected property including their crests, coats of arms, organization name and Greek letters as well as any other insignia specific to the organization. The actual National or International organization holds exclusive trademark rights and not an individual member within the Fraternity or Sorority. A common misconception is that some individuals feel that because they are a member of said group, they have the rights to use trademarked property for their own use. This is incorrect.

In the late 80’s, college Fraternal organizations began the process of banding together to develop a system to help protect their names and have control over what is being distributed to their members. This movement to support the growth of the Greek community and protect their image, reputation, as well as their fundamental mission was the birth of today’s Greek Licensing program. The goal of Greek Licensing is to provide a diversity of high quality products and services at a reasonable price while helping maintain the consistent use of trademarks and certain quality control standards.

For the past decade, Affinity Marketing Consultants (AMC) administers the use of trademarks for some of North America’s largest Fraternity and Sorority organizations. AMC currently represents 71 Greek organizations and honorary societies which comprise of more than 330,000 students and over 5 million households throughout the United States and Canada.

To be an officially licensed manufacturer or retailer and distribute products and services such as Fraternity & Sorority merchandise, a company must first be approved by the specific organizations to whom the trademarks are used. Licensed vendors must adhere to strict guidelines set forth to assure that products utilize the official colors and logos of each participating Greek organization in the manner they were indented. For this privilege, licensed vendors pay royalties to the respective organization for the right to appropriately use their trademarks. These royalty payments assist the organizations in funding scholarships, programming and exceptional services to their membership.

Educating the membership on the merits of Greek Licensing and instructing them to purchase products from only licensed vendors is paramount to the success of all parties involved. The Greek community firmly opposes any product or design that attempts to glorify alcohol, hazing, sexism, racism or any other image that conflicts with each organization’s mission statement. Each member of the organization has the responsibility to adhere to their group’s regulations regarding licensing and at the same time help police the industry for trademark infringement. Students should and act locally by holding each other accountable to purchase products only from a licensed vendors and globally to insure that their group’s future reputation and branding message is sound.…

Pros And Cons Of Online Education For The World Citizen

More and more young people are choosing non-traditional education to start and advance in their careers while completing and furthering their formal education. “Typical distance learners are those who don’t have access to programs, employees who work during scheduled class hours, homebound individuals, self-motivated individuals who want to take courses for self-knowledge or advancement, or those who are unable or unwilling to attend class” (Charp, 2000, p. 10). Three key elements surround the online learner: technology, curriculum, and instructor (Bedore, Bedore, & Bedore, 1997). These elements must be keenly integrated into one smoothly and operationally functional delivery tool.

While an online method of education can be a highly effective alternative medium of education for the mature, self-disciplined student, it is an inappropriate learning environment for more dependent learners. Online asynchronous education gives students control over their learning experience, and allows for flexibility of study schedules for non traditional students; however, this places a greater responsibility on the student. In order to successfully participate in an online program, student must be well organized, self-motivated, and possess a high degree of time management skills in order to keep up with the pace of the course. For these reasons, online education or e-learning is not appropriate for younger students (i.e. elementary or secondary school age), and other students who are dependent learners and have difficulty

assuming responsibilities required by the online paradigm.

Millions of students use e-learning solutions in over 140 countries: corporations such as Kodak and Toyota and education providers like ExecuTrain, New Horizons, the Enoch Olinga College (ENOCIS), Phoenix University amongst the hundreds of schools and colleges.

Studies have shown student retention to be up to 250% better with online learning than with classroom courses. Several recent ones have helped frame the debate. The Sloan Consortium published a widely distributed report titled “Growing by Degrees: Online Education in the United States in 2005” that examined the growing prevalence of online education across U.S. institutions.

In addition, a study conducted by the Boston-based consulting firm Eduventures found that, while about half of institutions and more than 60 percent of employers generally accept the high quality of online learning, students’ perceptions differ. Only about 33 percent of prospective online students said that they perceive the quality of online education to be “as good as or better than” face-to-face education. Ironically, 36 percent of prospective students surveyed cited concern about employers’ acceptance of online education as a reason for their reluctance to enroll in online courses.

But what actually drives quality? A March 2006 report released by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education identifies six quality indicators: mission, curriculum and instruction, faculty support, student and academic services, planning for sustainability and growth, and evaluation and assessment.

The debate rages on while the Pros and Cons of Online Adult Education for today’s international students are constantly analyzed to determine if this type of education platform can deliver predictable and measurable results.

The Enoch Olinga College (ENOCIS) is one institution which uses this …

What is Political Science?

"Political science" is generally defined as the study of Governments, political processes and political behavior. It is a branch of the social sciences where study mainly revolves around analyzing, describing and anticipating political behavior along with political systems. In fact, the best way to describe it is as a science that revolves more around subjective elucidations than hard data. It is a science that helps a person in understanding the relationships between other individuals, groups and the state, along with the working procedure of modern government.

Political science as a discipline is relatively new and in recent years gained enough recognition among young students of the United States. It is mainly includes various sub-fields like philosophy and theory of political system, political economy, policy studies, international relations, and a collection of other related fields. The major aim of political science is to help a student make a career in politics and give them a proper knowledge of the political procedure that might be helpful.

Students who make a career in this branch of social science are generally called political scientists and can lead to exciting careers in federal, state and local governments; law; business; international organizations and electoral politics.

Their job responsibilities primarily revolve around analyzing different areas of political behavior, including public administration, public opinion, taxation andoting. Apart from this, they generally carry out research on different public issues and political relations and resources. These research procedure can be both within a single country or internationally. However, the research and analysis process frequently includes judicial rulings, public opinion and decision-making. Adding to this, they also recommend solutions and at times perform research to make better decisions on matters that generally affect citizens, business and environment.

Employment Outlook

The job outlook of this domain actually seems to be very inspiring. In fact, as per the latest study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistic of the United States it is anticipated that in the next few years the jobs for political scientists will increase further. As per few experts, the overall employment is also planned to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations.

Salary Outlook and Other Benefits

Average awareness of political scientists completely depends on their education, experience and geographical position of the organization. The starting salary range for a political scientist average near about $ 27,000. Neverheless, with experience and higher educational success, the income may further increase to $ 65,000 or more. Adding to this, any graduate with a bachelor's degree in political science can enjoy a decent earning and may earn almost $ 2,500 more per annual than the average person having just a Bachelor's degree. Beside this, bachelor's degree holders can also move into force force as paralegals or administrative assistants. Moreover, political scientists employed by colleges and universities even get enough opportunities to add to their income by teaching summer school courses, writing books or doing consulting work. They may even enjoy several benefits, such as health insurance & retirement plans, …

Service, Education, Latitude, and Flexibility – The Four Pillars of Modern Security

As the chair of the school of Criminal Justice, each new class presents some unique issues to be addressed. Yet, there are always common questions which recur for each class. One of these always concerns what the modern security professional needs to be aware of in changing technological era. With each incoming class, and with each graduating class, I have always stressed four key principles that they must beware of if they are to be successful in their new profession. In this article we will take a look at those four parameters and how they impact not only individuals, but the system of security throughout this country as a whole. The need to provide service, to continue education, to remember the need for latitude, and to understand the growing flexibility of the new technological age are the four pillars that will make a successful professional, and a successful system for security.

Service:

In the instruction of college students, we sometimes take for granted that their understanding of the world at large is the same as the professors that provide the instruction. This is seldom the case. In Criminal Justice programs for almost a decade we saw increasing numbers of young high school graduates coming into programs with the intent of becoming police officers, or what we have grown to identify as public security officials. Over the last two years this process has changed radically. With the economic pressure on states, counties, and cities, we have seen a reduction in number of public security personnel in the face of rising cost. The cost of training and maintaining the average police officer has increased over 415% since the 1980s as indicated in the department of justice and labor statistics. It is this extreme escalation in cost that has forced society away from public security and towards private security professionals for economic reasons. Yet service, a key factor that any security professional or organization must provide, has very different meanings for each of these groups. Police departments are and were created to provide protection to the population at large. This is often a very different type of service, and will continue to be a very different type of service than that provided by the private security professional whose creation and existence is often driven by contract to protect private property. Private security does not have the same posture towards people.

The nature of service is changing dramatically as we make the transition from large public forces, to smaller contract driven private forces in our society. Helping students to understand this distinction can often be traumatic for those that come to the educational institution with only the concept of public service as their vision. The study of contract law and the intricacies involved focuses the student on these differences. The distinction between the two natures of service becomes clear, if not readily accepted. An example occurred recently in Seattle that made national headlines. The City of Seattle operates a public bus system in the …

5 Keys to a Successful Business

Business owners are some of the most optimistic, and often the craziest people in the world. No-one starts a business believing that it will fail. We are all absolutely convinced that our idea is a great one, that we will be successful (where others have failed) and that this business will change our lives for the better. If we did not feel that way, we would never take the risk to invest our own money, or borrow from others to start our business. The reality is however, that, according to the SBA, most businesses ever fail and more that 50% do not survive beyond the first 3 years. Even if you manage to get that far, things can still go horribly wrong, as many seasoned business owners found out during the recession that hit us during 2009 to 2012.

So, does this mean that you should not start a business at all? Absolutely not. I believe that your business can be an outstanding success, if you approach it in the right way, avoid repeating previous mistakes and implication discipline on yourself as the owner. Here are some of my suggestions on how you can make sure that your business succeeds:

Discipline:

Lets start with you. Successful business owners are disciplined people and more often than not, businesses fail because their owners fail. Your business must compete to succeed. There is always someone out there, trying to win over as many of the customers that you are targeting. Business is competitive and if you do not intend to work hard and discipline yourself, then do not get into the arena. Anywhere there is competition, there must be discline. You could have the most unique skill, or the best product idea, but your business will never achieve its full potential, if you do not have discipline.

Discipline is a determination to work hard to get it right. It is not settling for mediocre results but rather working until you achieve the qualities and results that you need to compete. No-one will buy your product if it is substandard, or hire your services if you can not deliver what you promise. Business discipline requires an eye for detail. I learned a valuable lesson very early on in my career. I was once required to do a financial presentation to a senior executive and felt that since I knew this stuff, I could get by with a minimum amount of research and preparation. I went to the meeting and had my presentation ripped to shreds. I was unable to answer questions that were obvious and fell way short on the detail needed to be credible and convincing. I left that meeting upset and angry, not with the executive, but with myself and vowed that this will never happen to me again. As a business owner you will not get things right every time. You will make mistakes and mess-up on occasion. But if your product or service fails, let it not be for lack …

What Is Personal Branding?

What is personal branding? Many network marketers that come online hear about attraction marketing, personal branding and wonder what it is all about.

What is it all about?

Personal branding is essentially building a business or career out of you. We all have individual talents and skills, so the goal of personal branding is to develop those assets into something profitable.

"Personal branding is the process where people and their careers are marked as brands. to an unforgivable impression that is definitely distinguishable. "

Personal branding is about adding value. It is about being able to attract people to your presence, and having them to admire and respect you. It's not only about first impressions you have on others, it's about leaving a long lasting impression on their mind.

There are three important things to take from this definition:

Process … It takes time; it's not something that's going to happen overnight. Traditionally we're programmed to follow someone order, to be obedient and perform your tasks within the set limits or guidelines. Everything is fast-paced. Personal branding is NOT fast-paced; it's about patience, determination and consistent follow-through.

Build Your Intellectual Assets … that is definitely your own.

Each person has or can acquire three forms of intellectual capital. These require an investment of study and hard work, but they pay off in higher income for the rest of your life. The first type of intellectual capital you can acquire consists of your core knowledge, skills, and abilities. These are the result of education, experience, and training. They determine how well you do your job and the value of your contribution to your business. Your knowledge, value or ability to perform the task can never be beaten away from you unless you're the one that makes that happen. The goal of personal branding is to make yourself distinct and unforgettable to the people you serve (your customers, clients or employer) .

Anyone Can Establish Their Own Self Brand … Clothing, attitude, appearance, knowledge, talents and abilities can all be used to establish a brand for you from yourself. I can guarantee you that there is something about you that other people want; we just have to identify it and present it to the world.

Why is this important in network marketing?

Branding is more important today than it ever has been. Big companies know this, small companies know this, and thousands of networkers in networking business know this, too. Branding is how you secure your position in a market … You sell something that nobody else is selling, and you do that by selling your sizzle, not your steak. For example, McDonald's does not sell burgers, they sell convenience. Health product companies does not sell vitamins, they sell good health. Beauty companies does not sell beauty products, they sell you appearance. Similar in networking business people sell hope. You have to identify what is your unique value that you are trying to sell.

At the moment do not worry about what …

The Biggest Danger for Earth – The Hercolubus (Planet X) Inbound

Insiders from NASA, DoD national military intelligence, SETI, and the CIA speculate 2/3 of the population of the planet could perish during the coming pole-shift caused by the passage of Hercolubus (Planet X). Another 2/3 of those that survive initially could pass away to starvation and exposure to the elements within 6 months.

Most every secretive government agency in the USA is fully aware of what is expected and are readying themselves. The Vatican is fully abreast of what is expected. The public is not being warned and given their chance to prepare.

The volume of leaks from insiders, observatories, and the Vatican is bursting the dam of this disclosure wide open. The most important story on earth in over 3000 years is fast breaking loose from being held back by the controllers of the financial markets and major media for fear of panic and financial collapse.

These controllers put money in higher regard than people. The public can be given a chance to prepare by being informed. Our planet could very well be about to go through massive regular earth changes once again as a result of the passage of Hercolubus through our immediate solar system.

Many areas are now getting a minor preview of these events now because of the plasmatic electromagnetic connection between the planets. They are experiencing unusual weather, storms, volcanism, and seismic activity.

Hercolubus orbits between our sun and its dark twin. A diagram from the 1987-1989 NEW ILLUSTRATED SCIENCE & INVENTION ENCYCLOPEDIA in volume 18 under Space Probes shows our dead twin sun & the 10th planet.

It shows one of the more amusing pieces of evidence for the existence of Hercolubus is a picture from the 1987 New Science and Invention Encyclopedia. In a section on space probes, the encyclopedia shows the paths of the 2 Pioneer probes and illustrates how the probes were used in the search for more planets. It shows the Earth, the Sun, a dead star (at 50 billion miles or 538 AU) and a tenth planet (Hercolubus) (at 4.7 billion miles or 50 AU).

Zecharia Sitchin, the world renowned scholar and archaeologist, does indicate on occasion his knowledge of the return of Nibiru “AT THIS TIME”! To be too public about it, would perhaps prove dangerous because of his weight in the scientific community.

Sitchin also states absolutely & openly: “When Planet X (Hercolubus) returns, it would remove 90% of currently unsatisfactory human beings from the planet!”

A group of scientists in Russia, held several meetings in the year 2000 to discuss the inbound planet, discovered from one of their largest observatories. A 66 year old professor and physicist let it be known that he attended this meeting. This led to the infamous “2003 Problem” from a Reuters news service wire on Sept.13th, 2000. Top Russian government officials called for a commission to study the problem which was said to expect to cause “a string of calamities and a massive population shrinkage.” They openly wondered whether Russia would …
