Is Legalizing Marijuana Playing With Fire?

When marijuana is available legally for patients with medical conditions there can be a number of benefits if certain conditions apply: If the pharmaceutical drug options to treat the patients symptoms carry more risks than marijuana; if the marijuana offers more therapeutic benefits than the pharmaceutical drugs and if the profits from marijuana sales are channeled into constructive enterprises that will benefit society as a whole.

However, legalizing marijuana for recreational use is a whole different concept and one that has many people worried. The parties that are lobbying to legalize marijuana claim that legalization will supposedly take the manufacture and sale of marijuana out of the hands of drug addicts, drug cartels and other clandestine factions and into the domain of regulated manufacturers and retailers. Obviously, this will allow the taxes from sales to be directed into the public health and education systems, which would be far better than the current situation where only drug dealers benefit financially.

But there are several downsides to legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes. One of the main issues is that legalization sends out a message to impressionable adolescents that marijuana is perfectly acceptable. The other issue is that it will become far easier for minors to purchase marijuana even though it will probably only be available to those over 21 yo. Just like alcohol, teens can always find older siblings or friends to buy cannabis for them but having said that, it's already fairly easy for young people to purchase marijuana, whether it's legally acquired or not.

So What's Wrong With Marijuana?

Besides the statistics indicating that marijuana is a gateway drug for heavier drugs, marijuana itself can be very damaging to both physical and mental health. Physically it causes fatigue and increases the risk of heart disease and cancer, particularly lung cancer (if it's smoked) and cancer of the lymphatic system as well as oral tumors and other forms of cancer. Studies have shown that smoking marijuana is far more carcinogenic than nicotine and most people are well aware of the cancer risk from smoking cigarettes. Neurologically, marijuana is a well-known trigger for mental illnesses such as bipolar and schizophrenia and the damage it can cause to a developing brain can be catastrophic.

In normal brain development, significant changes occur in brain structure and function during the adolescent years and healthy brain function and growth needs to be supported through a healthy diet, adequate sleep and other favorable lifestyle factors. So consider the outcome if the developing brain does not receive the ideal requirements for normal growth and instead is exposed to neurologically-toxic substances such as marijuana (or other drugs).

Research carried out at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the US showed that adolescents who use cannabis regularly have abnormal changes to their brain structure and the youngger the person is when they begin using marijuana, the greater the brain abnormality. Addressing education inequity requires aligning state aid to community need (Letters)

It was unfortunate to see inaccuracies in a recent article quoting Amherst town budget chief Sean Mangano about our research on equity in state education aid, “School funding report draws town’s criticism,” Oct. 8, page A10. As a regional chamber of commerce and a statewide education advocacy organization, we believe that growing inequality and economic uncertainty necessitates a statewide approach steeped in equity.

Our report shows that 14% of state Chapter 70 aid for schools (almost $800 million a year) is not based on community need. This aid goes predominantly to wealthier communities at the expense of students in less wealthy districts where the state has not fully met its responsibility to fill funding gaps. The Amherst and Amherst-Pelham school districts receive 1 percent or about $7.8 million of that total.

The recommendations in our report redirect $25 million of statewide non-needs-based aid toward communities that need it the most. Our proposal affects approximately $275,000 in state aid to the Amherst and Amherst-Pelham districts, not $8 million, as Mr. Mangano suggests.

Our report does not recommend or imply less spending in Amherst and Amherst-Pelham; it addresses how much the state should be contributing. The two districts collectively budgeted $18.7 million beyond required spending in FY20. This level of spending reflects both commitment and capacity to fund schools. But it is not possible in many districts, rural and urban alike, equally committed to their students.

As a state, we have an imperative to center equity until we meet our obligation to fill existing funding gaps in less wealthy communities.

Molokai slow internet causing problems for education, work

HONOLULU (AP) — Slow internet service has become an increasing problem for Molokai residents on Hawaiian Home Lands properties.

Service provided by a single telecom provider has caused difficulties for residents working at home or families engaged in distance learning, Hawaii Public Radio reported Monday.

Sandwich Isles Communication secured an exclusive license with the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands in 1995 to bring telecom services to rural homestead communities. In return, other companies must use and pay for the Sandwich Isles infrastructure to reach customers.

Sandwich Isles founder Al Hee was convicted of federal tax fraud, served nearly four years in prison and faces nearly $50 million in fines for defrauding the U.S. government. The company was stripped of $257 million in assets.

Democratic state Rep. Lynn DeCoite, who represents Molokai, said she has received numerous complaints from homesteaders.

“Anger, frustration. You can’t even get through to a live body to talk about what the situation is, or negotiations of how they can have their bills paid, or you can transfer over to another carrier,” DeCoite said.

Hawaiian homesteader Kui Adolpho said her only option for service in Hoolehua is Sandwich Isles, but frozen screens and constant buffering are a daily ordeal for her three children taking elementary school classes at home.

Adolpho also works from home, adding to the strain on limited bandwidth.

She began an online petition to raise awareness about the problems, noting that some homesteaders have to pay for internet hot spots to obtain adequate service.

“I expected lags and, you know, the occasional interruptions. But it got to the point where my children couldn’t even get instruction at all,” Adolpho said.

Sandwich Isles said it is aware of the problems with internet speed and plans to upgrade its infrastructure.

The company also said it is in negotiations to provide internet service in Hoolehua through Spectrum, which is owned by Charter Communications Inc.

A growing crisis in special education

Our daughter Mae is 4. She has Down syndrome, and we are fighting to keep her in school.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, and in any other year we would work with friends, families, and organizations to fund-raise, advocate, and spread awareness for those who share Mae’s diagnosis.

But, of course, this is unlike any other year. As the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic drags on, we have had to work harder than ever to advocate for basic educational rights and services for all children with special needs.

When schools began shutting down in March, families across the nation were faced with the reality that their children with special needs would lose the services and professional therapies that are provided through public school systems once a child reaches the age of 3.

More than seven months have passed since children have experienced a normal school day. Remote learning is a stopgap for general education students, but for many children with special needs, this gap continues to grow and requires in-person support and structure. The future promise of “compensatory services” rings hollow as we continue to watch our children regress. We are deeply grateful for the efforts and sacrifices made by the teachers who have provided so much support to Mae, who understand she cannot get what she requires through a remote structure. Mae had been thriving at her school, with the structure and therapies that it provided. Her mobility improved, and she had begun to use her sign language and speech to communicate better. In these past 7 months, she began resorting to screaming and hitting when she was frustrated or to get attention, abandoning the skills she had been working daily to improve.

The Boston Teachers Union continues to advocate for delays in the return to school — even for high-needs students who require therapies that cannot be delivered via Zoom. With a court action hanging in the balance, many families like ours continue to lose what’s left of our faith or trust in the process. There is a palpable fear that children like Mae will not see a full week of school all year, and that there will be continued delays and assumptions despite the positive experiences seen in districts across the country that have been reopened for months.

We do not say any of this with a cavalier attitude, nor with a disregard for sensible safety measures. One of us spent over a decade working in public health and emergency response, and the other is a physician assistant at a Boston hospital. Additionally, Mae has spent much of her life immunocompromised. We are well versed in what it means to have an at-risk child, and what life in an intensive care unit feels like. For years, her being in public was a health risk. However, Mae’s specialists at Boston Children’s Hospital agree that the benefits of having her in school outweigh the risks of keeping her home. Podium Education Raises $12M to Help Colleges Offer For-Credit Tech Programs

With the labor market and college campuses reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic, the arrival of new online learning platforms teaching in-demand tech skills to undergraduates comes at a fortuitous time.

That’s the case for the builders of these tools as well, like Podium Education . Since launching at the start of 2020, the Austin, Texas-based startup has partnered with over 20 colleges and more than 1,000 students. And announced $ 12 million in Series A funding.

Podium’s premise is simple: offer online classes, with sophisticated design and production, taught by leading experts in technology fields that are attractive to companies hiring in the modern jobs market. It aims to equip all students, regardless of academic focus, with digital competencies.

“We believe that soft skills plus hard skills create the talents that the workplace demands,” said Brooks Morgan, Podium Education co-founder and CEO. “Whatever your passion is, whatever it is that you are going to try and do in this world, do it with the skills that will get you a better job within your field.”

This funding round is led by Sid Krommenhoek at Album VC and Zander Rafael at Spring Tide Capital, with Firework Ventures, Degreed, Learn Capital, Goldcrest Capital, CampusLogic and 137 Ventures also participating. Podium will use the funds to offer more classes, at more colleges, Morgan said.

Podium class content is produced in-house, with prestigious teaching talent and glossy video production creating a product that resembles the offerings of other online teaching platforms like Masterclass. The company has invested heavily in content. Teaching materials include datasets from Netflix, Spotify and Lime Scooters for student use.

But unlike other competitors that cater to general consumers, Podium aims to deliver courses within the traditional university environment. Students meet weekly in a virtual setting with other members of their campus community to take classes.

Offering a program that is supplementary to existing undergraduate programs is a key difference between Podium and rival online educators, Morgan said. Podium classes can be taken for credit, and are federal financial aid and Pell Grant-eligible. Students, regardless of major, can take them to minor in data science. Thanks to the recent funding round, options to minor in web development and digital marketing are enrolling now for January 2021.

“We’re able to invest more capital than any single institution would be able to invest in a program like this,” Morgan said. “Rather than an institution having to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop a program, we spend millions instead. They get world-class content, turnkey.”

The Podium partnership model requires zero out-of-pocket production expenses or from institutions and can be launched to students in as little as two weeks. Podium takes a 50 percent fee from institutions for each student enrolled in one of its courses.
