4 Excellent Films Commemorating the Battle of Little Big Horn

In honor of June 26, we would like to recommend the following historically “accurate” films: Son of the Morning Star, Little Big Man, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and American Experience’s Emmy award winning documentary Last Stand at Little Big Horn

Between June 25 and 26, 1876, a combined force of Lakota and Northern Cheyenne led the United States 7th Cavalry into a battle near the Little Bighorn River in what was then the eastern edge of the Montana Territory. The engagement is known by several names: the Battle of Greasy Grass, the Battle of Little Big Horn, and Custer’s Last Stand. Perhaps the most famous action of the Indian Wars, it was a remarkable victory for Sitting Bull and his forces. They defeated a column of seven hundred men led by George Armstrong Custer; five of the Seventh’s companies were annihilated and Custer himself was killed in the engagement along with two of his brothers and a brother-in-law. Known as the battle that left no white survivors, Little Big Horn has inspired more than 1,000 works of art, including over 40 films. Here are four of the best…

Son of the Morning Star

Based on the 1984 best selling historical novel by Evan S, Connell, Son of the Morning Star won five Emmys when it first aired in 1991. Focusing on the life and times of General George Armstrong Custer, it takes up Custer’s life near the end of the American Civil War, follows him through his involvement in famous Indian wars, and culminates with the battle of Little Big Horne. I particularly like this version because it attempts to get beyond the stereotypes and introduce you to the real man; it provides an excellent introduction to the personalities involved and the events leading up to and following the battle.

Little Big Man,

The 1970 film Little Big Man, directed by Arthur Penn and starring Dustin Hoffman, was based on Thomas Berger’s 1964 fictionalized “historical” novel by the same name. Admittedly adjusted history, it tells the satirical, fictional and picaresque story of Jack Crabb; a white boy orphaned in a Pawnee raid and adopted by a Cheyenne warrior, he eventually becomes the only white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn. It is considered a “Revisionist Western” because Native Americans receive a sympathetic treatment that was uncommon for Western films in previous decades. Revisionist or not, I simply adore this wickedly humorous film about one man’s life revolving through the kaleidoscope of cultures that made up the American “Wild” West, and I recommend it with all my heart.

Bury My heart at Wounded Knee,

HBO’s 2007 adaptation of Bury My heart at Wounded Knee, a 1970 classic of Native American history by Dee Alexander Brown, recounts the struggle of the Indian Wars from the perspectives of three people: Charles Eastman, a young Sioux doctor who received his medical degree from Boston University in 1889; Sitting Bull, who led the combined forces at Little Big Horn and refused …

The University Cafeteria

Cafeterias and restaurants are important in university campuses. The largest Cafeteria of the university designed for use by staff, students and visitors is generally the most visited component of a university. It is also a place where students and faculty can take their visitors for a brief coffee break or a lunch hour visit. A well-designed Central cafeteria, housed perhaps in the student center adds to functional efficiency of the university. For here, the lunch hour can be combined with a visit to the bank, post office and the book store along with a friendly exchange of words with colleagues, fellow students, visitors, staff and faculty who may be visiting the same building at the same time. Universities where such centers are not common would do well to plan for it on their campuses.

As mentioned, the ideal location for the central cafeteria of a university is the student center. The student center building containing the cafeteria, along with the administration building can easily be designed as the two largest buildings on a university campus because of their central and essential functions. Both of these buildings need to be accessed from the academic departments as well as by outsiders and vehicles. Therefore, their placement in the university in conjunction with parking areas and the university boulevard has to be incorporated in the master plan. The best location for a student center on a campus is a location close to the administration building but towards the student residential area. It must also be close to the University Boulevard and Visitors Parking area. The building needs to be surrounded by lawns and gardens containing benches for sitting.

The university cafeteria needs to be spacious not just because of the large number of its visitors but also because spacing between tables should ideally be much more than the spacing between tables in an ordinary restaurant. Students often use these tables to read or complete an assignment along with a snack, lunch or dinner. The acoustic design of a university cafeteria should be such as to minimize noise level. Using non-reflecting wall coverings and providing sections of the cafeteria that can be opened to surroundings during busy hours takes care of this need. Music may never be permitted inside a university cafeteria for the same reason. Other sound proof sections of the student center can be designed to permit music.

It may be mentioned that a university cafeteria needs to serve nutritious food at subsidized rates. Its primary clients are students, who are not earning members of society. Two different models for running such cafeterias are prevalent. In the first one, the university gives out a contract to a private caterer. In the second, the university runs its own food services department and runs the cafeteria by hiring the required staff. Both models have inherent limitations. When services are contracted out to a private caterer he gets an assured and captive clientele without having to face competition of the open market. This can, and …

The Ultimate Combination of Education and Technology – The Distance MBA Degree

Due to the incessant and ever-increasing demand of many companies and corporations for the most talented and skilled people to hold their tops posts, the need for a comprehensive and detailed system of training these select individuals has risen over the years. And the best way to get a scientific approach to management is through the perfect balance of theory and practice that is offered by an MBA degree. Very few other programs, if any, offer better training in all the aspects and nuances of management and running every aspect of a business like the MBA program. So it's not surprising that more and more people are turning to it to enrich their knowledge and to significantly bolster their resumes.

It's a very common fact that those who have received the benefit of an MBA degree are usually entrusted with higher posts, greater responsibilities, and higher pay than those who attempt to climb the corporate ladder without them. But it's also true that there are several people who are not able due to time, schedule or distance to enroll themselves in traditional MBA classes. Many of these classes would require students to attend classes like regular university students or to attend night classes. And for those who live far away from institutions of learning or are engaged with their jobs or families far too much too much time or energy to spare, this poses serious problems. Many just have to accept the fact that a regular MBA degree is not for them. But should this stop gifted individuals from learning advanced management skills? Of course not!

The perfect solution for this problem would be the distance MBA degree. Distance education, as its name implies, is perfect for educating students that are not physically 'on-site'. And because of significant advances in technology, such as the Internet and all the powers of communication that come with it (such as web chat, e-mails, online modules etc.) students are assured that they get their lectures in real time and that their reading materials are received complete and with as little delay as possible.

There are many forms to this kind of education. These include: correspondence courses through snail or e-mail, non-interactive broadcast video, pre-recorded video, live teleconference or videoconference, and online / offline computer courses. With the variety of options, students can pick the one that is most convenient for their needs. …

Do College Grads Need More Training?

In an article published in the Deseret Morning News, Wendy Leonard says, “Colleges and universities dump a lot of graduates into the work force, and yet some in the work force still need additional, specialized training to perform well in the jobs they choose.”

Whether the college grads come from vocational training schools, career education programs or other traditional college or university programs, employers do often speak about the need for additional training.

Although qualified in the technical content on paper, some new grads need extra training on the soft skills required to be effective in their new jobs.

Employers and colleges are finding ways to collaborate to create custom training opportunities that will meet the need for this additional post graduation training.

Salt Lake Community College and Utah College of Applied Technology offer programs to help employers tailor training courses to meet their business needs.

One such employer, Stampin Up!, a supplier of craft products for the scrap booking marketplace, operates two state-of-the-art facilities in Utah. In partnership with Salt Lake Community College, they applied for grant money to facilitate a series of communication training seminars for their new employees.

New college grads should consider the availability of additional training as they evaluate the companies where they want to begin their careers. Consider asking about the availability of additional training in the following areas:

-Team building

-Leadership or supervisory training

-Customer service and client relations

-Interpersonal skills

-Project management

New employees should also consider working on professional certifications to enhance their professional development. Research professional associations in the career areas of interest and explore the certifications that these professional career organizations support.

Seriously consider companies that will pay for membership in professional associations, cover the cost of certification or additional training as needed.…

Where to Buy Investment Properties

So, you’ve decided to invest your money in property – good for you! There are a range of things you’ll have to consider, but one of the most important factors in your investment’s return potential is location, location, location! The area in which a property is situated is a major determining factor in that property’s value-a two-bedroom apartment in a good location can be worth three times as much as a four-bedroom house in a less desirable one. When it comes to choosing an area for your property investment there are several factors you must consider, and depending on your long-term plans for your investment, your location needs may vary considerably.

The quick sale

If you’re planning on playing the market and buying to quickly sell again, it’s a good idea to choose an area that you believe is on the verge of a boom. Of course, this is the holy grail of real-estate and everyone would like to catch something on the verge of a boom, but if your plans are to buy and sell your way to profit there are a few indicators which could lead you to a boom area. For example, there may be a mine or factory opening nearby-this would bring employment to the area and in a lucrative industry like mining, property prices would skyrocket for the time in which the mine was active.

The solid rent-generator

If your property investment goals are to generate a steady stream of rental income without ever having to search too hard for tenants, you need to consider buying somewhere near a university or close to the city. A university is a constant source of people who need to live nearby and are not in the position to buy, so if you choose property close by there will be no shortage of tenants.

The sure bet

If what you are looking for from your investment is a safe, steady asset that will retain its value and grow over time, there are several areas to choose from where this is the case, but be prepared to pay a big premium-and once you’re into the market in that area, STAY IN!

The Gamble

There are certain areas that begin as working class or rough areas that have the potential to become high-value areas over a longer period of time. Places close in to the city are usually good candidates for this, and just a little attention from the council in the form of a makeover can usually do the trick on these locations. On the other hand, sometimes areas stay ‘dives’ forever, in which case you’re stuck with a house at the dodgy end of town…

The decision of where to purchase property is never one to be entered into lightly, and the best way to prepare for it is to arm yourself with as much property investment advice as you can and hope that a combination of luck and good research leads you to the money.…

Why Don Imus Was Right to be Sacked

The CBS popular radio announcer, Don Imus, who enjoys over two million listeners on the radio station WFAN, called the Black members of the Rutgers University team “nappy headed hoes”. As usual, he does not believe he is racist and leading Black leaders called for him to be fired. As a Black person, normally I would be against anyone losing their job or livelihood because of a racist remark, no matter how abhorrent. But this case is different for three main reasons.

First, Imus has had thirty years in his job, building up a sizable audience for his morning show; people who, no doubt, look to him for guidance and being a role model. One would have thought that those years in the job would have given him a sensitivity for the feelings of his audience and a respect for the listeners who keep him there. One would also have expected that such long years would have built up an expertise which fosters the kind of responsibility and respect we would expect from such an experienced talk show host.

Yet, his critics say that during his thirty years he has shown a ‘pattern of racially charged remarks’ which he retorted were either ‘misinterpreted’ or ‘satirical’. Regardless of misinterpretation, or otherwise, they were still racist, yet he did not desist. But racist remarks of any kind have no place in the vocabulary of someone on the public stage who is supposed to be serving a diverse audience. Being in a position of authority, especially with the privilege of being White in a majority White community, carries certain responsibilities as well as rights. We cannot attack people who are weak, or powerless, then say we are not bullies. Just as one cannot continue to use racist language down the years, aimed at vulnerable members of the community, then say one is not racist. It’s a contradiction in terms. If we use the language of the bully, we are bullies, and if we use the language of the racist, we are racist. We cannot use the language of hate if we aspire to love. The two are incompatible.

Language Conveys Meaning

Second, the language we use defines who we are. For example, the word ‘boredom’ does not exist in my vocabulary. I have never used it in my lifetime to describe my feelings because I have too much to do in any one day and cannot find the time to be bored at any point. The word NO does not exist for me either, especially when trying to achieve something, because I believe everything is possible. Someone else who does not believe that will think ‘no’ first before they look at the possibilities. Moreover, I have never thought of saying anything racist about another person because I value every person and treat them with respect until they show me otherwise. So language is not just something we learn to use for communication or our benefit; not just something we pluck out …

eBay University … Rah, Rah, Rah

Remember pom-poms, megaphones, and cute cheerleading outfits from your school days. If you decide to take an eBay class, expect the opening of the course to bring about that kind of "rah, rah" feeling. However, eBay does not have a lot to cheer about. In just 10 years eBay has become a worldwide marketplace, purporting to be the most popular and largest on the Internet. It boasts that eBay makes over 50 million items available online, with more than 5 million items added everyday, not to mention that eBay has a single-handedly boosted digital camera sales. After all you can not be a profitable seller on the site without having one.

Do not get me wrong; the "rah, rah" business is not necessarily all bad because the instructors come to that position quite honestly. They have been very successful sellers; many of them power sellers, on eBay. They enthusiastically speak from their hearts and their own experiences. However, the eBay party line is a dominant theme during the introduction to the class and borders on being overkill. In all likelihood people would not have signed up for the class unless they were already serious about learning how to be buyers and sellers on eBay.

Since my reservations about eBay touting its own praises, I still recommend that you do take a class on the eBay basics. One day of your time will be well worth it. You can find classes in your area by going to "Community" on the eBay home page. From there click on "Community Calendar" and then "eBay University." The eBay University page provides information on eBay Basics or Beyond the Basics classes.

If you decide to attend a class, act fast because eBay classes fill up quickly. Why? Stop and think about it. There are more than 1.2 million registered eBay users, and and more than 25,000 members make five figure income as full time eBay entrepreneurs. In addition, more than 250,000 part timers make several thousand dollars a year of supplementary income. This has gotten the attention of many, and the many are flocking to the classes to learn how to get started right away.

The six modules that the eBay Basics course will deliver are:

1. The History and Safety Features – The history and background of eBay is designed as a welcome to new users. It is the "rah, rah" part to which I have been referring. It is interesting to have that in the booklet that follows along with the PowerPoint presentation for the class, but this could be read later if anyone is interested in that. The safety feature was an important part in the first module because it offers peace of mind to know that eBay has a safe environment with a success rate for transactions of 99.999%. There are more than 600 reps available 24 hours a day, but they do need more when you look at the ratio of users to tech support personnel. The eBay safety features …
