It is Never Too Early to Start Planning Your Career

It is never too early to start planning your career. If you are one of the few out there who are currently in high school and already thinking about what kind of school you want to attend after graduation you are already ahead of most people out there your age. At this point it may still be to early for you to make a final decision on the career path you want to take but it is a great time to at least see what is out there. The biggest problems young adults have when deciding how to continue their education is, not knowing what opportunities are out there for them. When I finished high school I had no idea what kinds of jobs were out there between the most common jobs like lawyer, doctor, law enforcement, engineering, etc. With as much information as there is on the internet these days and the ease at which you can access it there is no reason why anyone should have trouble finding out what career fields are out there. You can simply go to a site that has job listings like Careerjet.com and see what categories they have listed.

If you want to find out what kind of job would go with your personality there are various online tests you can take that will give you some decent results. Remember your personality will change over time and your results at 16 may be different then your results at 18 so take the test about once a year while you are in high school and see if you get different results. Careerpath.com has a free test you can take that wave the few of us that used it pretty good results. By pretty good results we mean it had our current, past, or dream jobs listed in the results. The Army career planning test and Navy career planning test wave combined results but they are free and can be another source you can use to see what kind of jobs are out there that that might fit your personality. The only down side to this one is you have to ignore the categories like Special Forces and things like that. You are looking for the results that come up that are the same as civil job titles. When you get a list of career fields that match your personality and a few others that you think you would like it is time to see what all falls into each career field. You can do this by simply using a search engine like Cuil.com or Google.com to find out a little more about each job category.

You can use the search engines to find schools for those kinds of jobs and by going to the schools website you can see what sub categories they have in that particular career field. Narrowing the job category down a little bit is a must because something like engineering is to broad of a job category to go to school for. You will want to decide what kind of engineer you want to be. There are many kinds of engineering degrees you can get like Aeronautical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and the list goes on. If you are currently in High School you have time to research these different career paths and decide what one is right for you. If you want to find out what categories out there that are right for you that have a good job growth outlook visit the Bureau of Labor and view their Statistics page and the list of their 30 fastest growing occupations to see if any of the job categories you have picked out have a good out look for the future. This can help you narrow down your search for that future career you will be working towards once once you graduate and continue your education after high school. Remember even if you are a freshman it is never too soon to start learning about opportunities that are out there for you. The more options you know about the better chance you have of finding that career that fits you and the more research you put into finding out about each opportunity the better your odds will be in finding a career that ensures you are in demand once you finish your schooling.
