Science Fair Project on Testing Drinking Water

You are intelligent enough to know that the purpose of most science fair projects is to teach students how to use scientific methods to solve problems on their own. A science fair project can allow students, parents, and teachers to make new discoveries together. One of those discoveries might be how clean your drinking water is.

Students may expect faucet water to be clean, but is it? A science fair project on testing drinking water can help them learn what is in the water they use. This outline will help them and you conduct a drinking water test.

State Your Hypothesis

A good example might be, “If I test drinking water from different sources, which will I find to be the best for my health?” A poor example would be, “If I drink tap water, what happens?”

Background Research

Learn all that you can about what water may contain. Research the effects of various contaminants, minerals, etc.

Develop a Drinking Water Test

What kind of drinking water test will you use? What kinds of drinking water will you test? Will you buy a kit, or simply order appropriate test materials? How will you collect the water to be sure you do not change its content?

What You Need for Drinking Water Tests

Students will need Colorimetric test strips for many drinking water tests. Kits are available from science fair websites. Water Safe Drinking Water Test is an EPA standardized, laboratory certified simple kit that identifies harmful levels of 8 different common contaminants in water: bacteria, chlorine, lead, nitrates, nitrites, pesticides, pH, and water hardness.

Predict Results

Write out a prediction of what you expect. Will your city tap water be the best water for your health? Should your family pay money to drink only bottled water? What do you predict your drinking water test will reveal?

Conduct Your Drinking Water Test

Students may choose from many drinking water tests. Here are a few possible tests. Younger students may want to use only one. Older students may combine a series of drinking water tests.

1. Basic: A basic drinking water test might allow students to test water for alkalinity, chlorine (both free and total), nitrate and nitrite, pH, and water hardness. What is the basic make-up of your water?

2. Bacteria: Along with a basic drinking water test, you might test for bacteria in the water. Water from a drinking fountain may show bacteria that collect on the bubbler and wash into the water.

3. City Water: What is in municipal drinking water? You can use the basic drinking water tests above, but check, too, for metals and sediment. Are corroding pipes contaminating the water?

4. Well Water: Since the government does not test private wells, there may be contaminants in the water taken from them. What might you find? Would you expect more sediment or less? Would your drinking water test be likely to find pesticides if the well is near a farm or garden where they are used?

My Story – "Why I Became a Teacher"

Imagine, the year is 1964; you are entering into the sixth grade. While it is a pleasant day, every fiber of your being realizes that something is different about this opening day of school. Your parents did not prepare you for this. The air is so thick that you can barely breathe. As you look around you can clearly see that, for the first time since you have been going to school, some of the students are African American. You see, my sixth grade year was to be the first year for segregation in the Marion County Schools. Lebanon Elementary was going through the changes that our country was going through. History was being made right before my eyes.

To make matters worse I must tell you, I was not much of a student. I was entering into the sixth grade and for the love of life I could not tell you how they passed me through the first five years of school. You see there were five of us in my family and I was the oldest. I did not have older siblings to lead the way and give me a clue as to why I was in school. My twin brother and I were sent to school unprepared, and I can tell you that even after five years of school, I did not know why I was here. But, I knew that I was falling further and further behind. Luckily though, I was figuring out this reading stuff. It made good sense to me, and it took me places that I had never been.

I can still remember being assigned the first seat in the first row. It was scary because no matter what I did, the rest of the class would certainly be able to see me. But, I had to turn around in order to see what was really going on in that classroom. My teachers name was Ms. Kessler. She looked like the oldest woman I had ever seen. The only thing bluer than her piercing eyes was her hair. While it is easy for me to be compassionate about her circumstances today, I only felt sorry for myself on that day. I knew that it was going to be a tough year and that I was not going to enjoy any part of it.

Each day though, I noticed that Ms. Kessler was spending more and more time at students’ desk. She even spent time at my desk. She was very strict, and very firm, but she spent time with individuals on an individual basis. She was obviously very serious about our academic achievement.

I will never forget the note on my first report card. “Are you serious about your learning?” Right there on my report card, for the entire world to see, I had a serious question that Ms. Kessler had taken the time to write. I knew by now that the only way to answer Ms. Kessler was with my actions. She …

4.    Unfortunately pupil discipline is becoming more of an issue in modern education.  It is important that you know what you can and can’t do to discipline your pupils.

5.    Charity law can also apply to schools if they received donations or funding.  By knowing how to deal with the paperwork and legal implications involved, you can make sure that you stay on the right side of the law.

6.    Estate management is another important area of education.  Perhaps you are considering buying or selling land for the school, or want help when hiring contractors.

7.    Like in other sectors, it is important to remember that construction, planning and environmental laws also apply to schools too.  If you’re in the process of having a new wing built, or wanting to make more of your playing fields, you’ll need to make sure that the plans are legal.

Academic Vs Athletic Scholarships – The Difference is Control

Do you know the key difference between academic vs. athletic scholarships? Obviously, one is for achievement in the classroom and one is for achievement in sports, but there are other major differences as well.

One of the major differences in academic vs. athletic scholarships is that the academic scholarship is a little more under your direct control. It is not easy to get one of these scholarships, but there is no real mystery as to how you go about getting one. If you excel in the classroom during your high school days, you apply for academic scholarships and your application is reviewed. A third party (in consultation with you school) decides if you meet the criteria for the scholarship and how you stack up against the competition. The rules and guidelines are posted up front and usually understood by all.

On the other hand, athletic scholarships are a whole different animal. One of the key differences in academic vs. athletic scholarships is this:

You can excel at your sport for four years in high school and do everything right, and still never get any attention from college coaches or any offers for a scholarship.

There are no set guidelines or rules for earning an athletic scholarship. Some great players simply fly under the radar of college coaches. At the same time, some average players get a big reputation early in high school and end up being recruited by many different colleges. I guess the best way to summarize the differences is that strange things can and do happen in the world of athletic scholarships.

As you can see, the key difference between academic vs. athletic scholarships is the element of control. That’s why it is extremely important for all student athletes who want to play in college take responsibility for their own recruitment. Athletes need to contact coaches with a letter and an athletic resume to make sure college coaches know who they are and what they can do for their athletic program.…

Film Review: The Prestige

Director Christopher Nolan has handed himself a difficult task of tackling a complicated story about two cold, central figures. Indeed, the complex premium of the film 'The Prestige' becomes a good escalating battle of wits presented the 'Nolan way.' A dazzlingly interesting narrative about two rival magicians from turn of the century London, 'The Prestige' revolves around the lives of Rupert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale). They start a friendship that ever turns into a rivalry after Rupert's wife gets killed in a magic trick that has gone wrong. Since then, they start trying to discover each other's secrets, and ruin each other's tricks along the way. The story escalates further when Alfred discovers the ultimate trick of the 'Transported Man,' a trick that will make Rupert lose his mind just to decipher Alfred's ultimate secret.

Dark, increasingly elaborate, complex, convoluted, contrived, and full of twists and turns, Nolan's dark vision for 'The Prestige' becomes a workout for the audience's mind. Filled with its labyrinth of conflicting ideas amidst the sincere human characters coming from the characters, the film is a mind-tickler that makes the viewer engaged with the story as s / he tries to penetrate its elegantly Victorian noir presentation to find out the film's own Ultimate trick. Underneath the film's physicality lies some mundane truths about love, life, career, sacrifice, and revenge. The film may be set during the Victorian days, but the universal issues it poses about rivalry and obsession make people relate to it very well. The film's plot-heavy story and striking moments either leaves the viewer exhilarated or disturbed for many possible reasons.

Technically, the film is nothing less than brilliant. The time period depicted is taken to perfection. The costumes and art direction are splendid. The effects look believable and seamless. The cinematography is stunning and validating. Indeed, the auteur in Nolan really surfaces in every film he makes.

Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan have collaborated on a powerful script with its non-linear pace complemented by the film's impressive visual and aural composition. Many films become under-written or half-developed, but 'The Prestige' is the opposite – it's almost too clever, that inevitably, some people do not get to appreciate its entity anymore. This film has its own audience really. Some may find it a cult classic of impressive cinematic magic; And yet, some may find it a ponderous tale that promises much, but in the end, delivers surprisingly little.

Those who find fulfillment in this kind of film can enjoy a great deal from it being a twisty thriller presented in a not so common ground – the dark and intelligent treatment Nolan is known for. They see an exemplary story with multi-faceted levels of artistry. From hers sheer finery and elegant details both inside and out, it reaps value out of the question, 'How did they do that?' – figuring out how Nolan has done the rare magic trick to come up with the compulsively absorbing 'The …

The 4 Levels of an Insurance Career Path

You may see many newspaper ads tying to hypnotize a prospective agent stating how easy it is to make $100,000. Moreover, they emphasize it can be done in the first year. Please give me a nickel for the 1,500,000 licensed life and health insurance agents that cannot achieve that. ($75,000 if you are calculating). Before $100,000 of income can be reached, most agents must achieve at least the third if not fourth level.

LEVEL ONE This is the insurance trainee, just starting out and continuing the first 12 months. This level is actually more about survival than it is about earnings. Many insurance trainee agents deplete savings accounts, ask relatives for loan assistance, and even take out a second mortgage on their house. Either they should have never applied for the position or the insurance agency has provided inadequate assistance to ease the agent’s burden. In the majority of cases, it is the later. Only 20% of agents struggle by, only to encounter another enduring battle.

LEVEL TWO This is the insurance rookie, who will be facing three more years of uphill challenges. Again, survival appears in the picture, along with enough income to keep from going under. The life preserver is based on both the agent’s attitude and selling skills. Selling skills start with finding the right people to focus your attention on. People that fit into your comfort zone and have a need for an insurance product you are familiar enough selling. This leads to giving a sufficient quantity of appointments. However, company provided scripts are a hard way to go when doing a presentation.. Of the appointments made, can the still inexperienced agent produce enough sales for a decent income? Only 8% of the starting agents now remain.

LEVEL THREE These are the insurance innovators with over 4 years experience and under 8. Why are they innovators? To survive the have broken just about all the career company rules of the plan to success. First, they have tossed out the insurance company presentation book, sometimes in favor of a plain yellow legal pad. The company presentation speech has been discarded in favor of a friendly conversation. The insurance innovator uses a lead acquisition system that quickly brings out the highest qualified prospects. This agent has stopped becoming an insurance seller. He now helps guide the prospect to a tailored plan that turns the prospect into a buyer. In addition, the insurance innovator has a valuable base of built up clients for additional sales.

As insurance is now officially a career, few of these agents drop out. Many start to specialize in selling fewer products. A lot now are semi-independent and some even have their own firms. For others they make take a new direction, with a different company or firm that seems much more promising. Incomes are often comparable or higher than the national average.

LEVEL FOUR The true insurance professionals. Numerous pros are fully independent. They have often signed contracts with six or more independent life …
