Harrington College of Design Honors Robert C Marks

Harrington College of Design honored Robert C. Marks with the Frances Harrington Award for outstanding achievement in Education and Interior Design. The event took place in the Grand Hall at Union Station, 210 S. Canal St., Chicago, Illinois. Nelson Sears, Communications Manager at Harrington, orchestrated the event. Never has the Grand Hall looked as good as it has for this special event. The room was resplendent, colored lights were mounted at the base of the Greco / Roman fluted columns that surround the room. The hall was finely appointed with wall decorations, balloons, and an assortment of flowers. A very fine dancing band that played in a manner that was festive yet not overly engaging.

Starting out as a student at the Frances Harrington Institution of Interior Decoration, Robert C. Marks took control of the school in 1959. A man of vision, Mr. Marks expanded the programs and course offerings. Seeing a need for school research, Mr. Marks started what came to be the largest and most replete Interior Design library in the country. Further, he saw to having the school accredited by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and changed the name to The Harrington Institute of Interior Design.

As time passed Marks developed educational seminars in conjuction with on-site tours to architectural destinations for research. They went to cities all over the world visiting famous places that have changed Interior Design. These seminar events along with their enhanced curriculum helped established Harrington Institute as the premier school for Interior Design in Chicago and as one of the leading Interior Design schools in the Country.

Mr. Marks saw a need for educational credentials for interior designers so he expanded the school to a college offering a Bachelor Degree. The Institute was renamed the Harrington College of Design as it remains today.

For years Harrington was located in the Fine Arts Building at 410 S. Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. This excellent location enabled Harrington students to take advantage of all the educational and cultural venues that Chicago has to offer.

Along with Mr. Marks, six other individuals were given awards.

For the Excellence in Design Award the following individuals were honored: Lucien Lagrange, Eva Maddox, Stanley Tigerman, and Victor Skrebneski.

For the Design Vision Award the following individuals were honored: Mayor Richard M. Daley and Commissioner Cherilyn Heremb.

Mr. Marks is a patron of the Arts. He is a supporter of Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Metropolitan Opera of New York. Mr. Marks sits on the Boards of leading Chicago cultural institutions and is a moving force in them.

The Fighter’s Career Path

People always have the liberty to choose whatever they want in life. However, some simple choices that seem to have uncertain consequences confuse us. If these options all bear good benefits, then it is even harder for one to choose. This analogy applies to the idea of choosing one’s martial arts discipline. With so many disciplines to choose from, how could one find a satisfying pick? This article will help you in what you are looking for.

The main reason as to why people have the difficulty in deciding on a certain discipline is because, just like everything else, they don’t have in depth knowledge about martial arts. In this article, we will give you categories that will help you decide.

Speed and Agility:

This is an important aspect of combat, or rather this is one categories for choosing a certain discipline. Speed pertains to the ability of a person to deliver strikes and movements that are not easy to intercept, while agility pertains to the ability to dodge strikes from an opponent. In this area, it is ideal for a person to be a lightweight and to be very active. Known martial arts disciplines that emphasize speed and agility are the following:

• Wing Chun Kung Fu

• Karatedo

• Shaolin Kung Fu

• Taekwondo

Power and Endurance:

This is another important aspect of fighting and among the categories a person should base his or her choice. Power pertains to the ability to deliver strikes that could induce tremendous punishment or overpower an enemy’s strength in grappling, while endurance pertains to the ability to absorb damage thrown by the opponent. In this area, it is ideal for a person to be heavyweight, having a physical built that is bigger than any normal person. Known martial arts disciplines that emphasize power and endurance are the following:

• Muay Thai

• Boxing

• Jiu jitsu

• Graeco-Roman Wrestling

Rhythm and Reflex:

These aspects in martial arts are important as well as considered to be special. A person can determine his or her choice of discipline in this category. Rhythm pertains to the gracefulness and effectiveness of a person’s steps, in terms of delivering attacks and defensive moves. In this area, it is ideal for the person to be flexible. Known martial arts disciplines emphasizing rhythm are the following:

• Tai Chi Chuan

• Capoeira

• Penkak Silat

Reflex, however, pertains to the special ability of a person to intercept attacks and find or create an opening to deliver a counter-attack. In this area, a person does not require specific physical attribute, therefore, applicable to any person regardless of the size or weight. Known martial arts disciplines emphasizing reflex skill are the following:

• Aikido

• Escrima/Arnis

• Marines CQC

The specific martial disciplines mentioned here are only among the examples worth looking, based on their popularity. But there are many other forms similar to these and it is good to identify them in the particular category given above.…

Post 9/11 GI Bill Changes – Military Students Can Attend Online Universities

Millions of military veterans have used the GI Bill throughout the decades in order to obtain an education and better their future. The GI Bill has seen numerous revisions and updates throughout the years. Let’s take a look at the changes in the latest post 9/11 GI Bill.

One of the biggest changes is that veterans have more options available. Now they can choose from apprentice programs, vocational schools, technical institutions and even online colleges with distance learning programs. This new change is expected to help veterans deal with unemployment. Experts predict that approximately thirteen thousand veterans would be able to secure employment within a year thanks to vocational training. These vocational programs are suitable for veterans who want to secure employment as soon as possible and who aren’t looking for a job that requires a four year degree.

These new changes will allow veterans to obtain very specific training which should help them to obtain jobs. The government is broadening the options for schooling with the intention of reducing unemployment for veterans; women in particular. Statistics provided by the U.S Department of Labor show that 16.6 of female veterans are currently unemployed. In order to combat the problem of unemployment, the current administration has introduced Obama’s American Job Act which provides a tax credit for any company who hires an unemployed veteran.

Changes have also been made in regards to “break pay”. This means that students will not receive benefits between enrollments. Students benefiting from the Montgomery GI Bill have the ability to switch over to the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

Housing stipends used to be only available to students attending traditional 4-year universities and colleges. However, now students enrolled in an online education program will also be able to qualify for benefits. This new stipulation will go into effect as of October of 2011. The Post 9/11 GI Bill allows for a stipend of one thousand dollars per year towards school books. Changes have also been made to cap out tuition for those attending a private university at $17,500. As a result, some students who are currently enrolled at a private university may have to pay some of their own way or obtain student loans.

The GI Bill was signed into law in 1944 in order to assist World War II veterans with university and vocational training. It also helped to provide veterans with access to various loan programs. One of the most significant part of the program was the home loan program which enabled a large number of Americans to purchase a home for the first time.…

Careers In Medical Radiography

The popularity of radiography in the field of medicine has grown exponentially. Radiographers were encouraged and trained to adopt the new technology of conducting diagnostic tests involving X-rays. It started with fluoroscopy, computed tomography and mammography. Medical radiographers later added ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging to the list of specializations.

Medical radiographers are experts who make use of imaging instruments to x-ray various body parts of human beings, in order to diagnose health problems properly. The procedure incorporates medical imaging actions to identify health related problems. Besides this, professionals also prepare the patients for radiology examinations by positioning them under the machines and ensuring appropriate doses of radiation. In addition, medical radiographers are also responsible for maintaining the records of patients and radiographic machines.

Career Scope In Medical Radiography

Medical radiography holds a promising career path for aspiring candidates. They generally find employment in the offices, hospitals, clinics and diagnostic imaging centers of medical practitioners. They are known to earn between $ 25 and $ 35 per hour. Over the next few years, the scope of medical radiography is expected to grow. Nowadays, the diagnosis of a disease without using radiography is considered impossible.

Diagnostic Radiography incorporates both ionization radiation and non-ionizing radiation, to create images for medical diagnosis. After laboratory tests, the X-ray is a commonly used method to diagnose an ailment. A specially trained professional called a diagnostic radiographer or a radiologic technologist undertakes medical diagnostic radiography.

Dental Radiography makes use of the technique to view teeth, while Projection Radiography involves the creation of images by placing the subject under X-rays or electromagnetic radiation.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to become a successful medical radiographer, you need to complete a graduate program in Medical Radiography. Graduates are offered a number of jobs and many times, they are employed even before the completion of the course. There are many recognized institutes that offer such courses. The American Registry of Radiology Technologists or ARRT manages certifying exams for Radiology Technologists.

The courses help to earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Medical Radiography. The basic imaging principles and preparation required for service is taught. More often than not, professionals assume management roles of higher levels, like Chief or Director, both in the private as well as the public sectors. They are also employed by research centers, where the level of seniority depends on the years of experience and specialty skills, in addition to education. The use of applied sciences in diagnosis is increasing by the day and the professionals are much thought after. A career in Medical Radiography is worth considering if you wish to remain in mainstream medicine in the future. …

What Rich People Know and Desperately Want to Keep Secret

It is natural to hide one’s source of success. The tendency to make the source secret is even high(er) when it comes to money-making. That is why the rich would not like to disclose their financial-success secret. But the good news is that there is revelation of the whole secret in this text entitled “What Rich People Know and Desperately Want to Keep Secret”.

Brian Sher, the author of this text was born in South Africa, and moved to Australia in high school. Sher obtained a degree in Marketing from the University of New South Wales.

His subsequent business travels overseas aroused his interest in consultancy, and after spending two years in Los Angeles, he returned to Australia and formed his own company, specialising in marketing and business-growth strategies.

Working with businesses, one of his major clients offered to partner him in a new venture – Vision Publishing. Under Sher’s direction, Vision Publishing experienced phenomenal growth. His extensive network and strong reputation as one of Australia’s most-dynamic and exciting marketers made him an active and sought-after business coach.

According to the author, most people dream of being rich; they imagine what it would be like to have more money than they know what to do with. Sher adds that for a brief moment, they leave their reality by playing ‘make-believe’. He says for most people, this is as far as they will ever get with this dream, and they will quickly snap back to inaction, for fear of stretching their boundaries too far.

Sher submits that a relative few people set off on a different journey, a journey so challenging and demanding, yet so exciting that it brings new life and new meaning. He adds that in the end, unfortunately, many of these dreams are also shattered as a result of not knowing what rich people know.

This author thus shares with you in this book, the basic but powerful principles of success and takes you on a journey towards personal and financial riches. Sher reveals what the world’s richest people know that everyone else does not know, and offers you tips for enriching your life and enhancing your bottom line. According to him, businesses and people succeed because they do the basics well, and in most cases, not because of luck, clever finance, extreme technology, or running ahead of the pack.

This book has six parts of 44 chapters. Part one generically focuses on the basics of success, and contains four chapters. Chapter one is based on what riches are and what rich people do. Sher says almost everyone you meet wants to be rich momentarily. He educates that the truth, however, is that being truly rich in life is not just about having more money.

Sher expatiates that being truly rich in life means having many other things more important than money, such as more fulfilling and rewarding relationships, good friends, a satisfying career, etc.

On how the rich people make all their money, the author reveals that …

Create Your Ideal Lifestyle

Lifestyle reflects our beliefs, attitudes, customs, behaviors, and values. A lifestyle can fill us with joy, keep us healthy, and allow us to become more successful. It can also contribute to illness or hold us back from the things we are capable of accomplishing.

Fortunately, we can choose actions and habits that keep us happy, healthy, and successful. We have that choice daily.

Maltbie Babcock summarized this very elegantly when she wrote, "A day dawns, quite like other days; in it, a single hour comes, quite like other hours; but in that day and in that hour the chance of a lifetime faces us."

That chance, however, presents a challenge. A familiar lifestyle is not easy to leave behind, even when negative habits or tolerations make it uncomfortable. Doug Firebaugh wisely said, "Something must die in order to grow – your old habits, your old self image, your old thinking, your old life … must be weeded out for the seeds of success to grow."

People want to be free from the consequences of their vices, but not necessarily from their vices. Many attempt changes that are too large to be realistic. Others try to change too many things at once. Old behaviors creep back very quickly.

For example, if it would burden you to carry out a new action on a regular basis, it is probably not a realistic change. Smaller changes carried out routinely more often lead to repeating change. Begin with one new action that can become a regular lifestyle behavior. Then look for tangible results from that change.

If you are not already living your ideal lifestyle, take time to think deeply about the following questions. Then write your answers in a journal. This exercise will help you create a clear picture of your ideal lifestyle. It will also help you to design a plan to begin creating the lifestyle that you want.

What is my current lifestyle?

How have my beliefs created that lifestyle?

What is my current lifestyle costing me?

If my lifestyle were to become ideal, what differences would I notice immediately in the major areas of my life?

For example, what would you be doing differently on a daily basis? What habits would you adopt, and what habits would you discard? Consider the changes you would notice in these areas:

  • Relationships (Family and Career)
  • Home environment
  • Wellness and self-care
  • Energy level
  • Serenity and inner stillness
  • Finances
  • Rest and relaxation
  • Temperament
  • Happiness and contentment

How would I look and feel most of the time if I lived my ideal lifestyle?

What tolerations, habits of thought, and actions are limiting me from living my ideal lifestyle?

What would it require of me to remove those limits?

What is the first thing in my current lifestyle that I would really like to change or improve?

Am I willing to commit to the necessary changes in thought and action to live my ideal lifestyle, and if so, when will I begin to make the first change?

Career Advice – Stop Calling What You Are Doing a Career!

Have you ever considered a specific point in your career that was a turning point to your current success? Was there a serious of decisions you made? Perhaps in college on which classes to take or later on which industry you wished to work in, or which job interviews to go for. Did you have an opportunity that you just took, maybe without even thinking?

When asked this question, I honestly could not remember, but if there was one, it must have come young. Although, I'd say I decided to stop listening to what people thought about what I was doing, or caring when people told me I could not do anything and turned those comments into challenges. Still, when I say "career" I never thought of what I was doing as a job, more of an adventure, a mission, a journey, a challenge.

If you really want to advance in your "career" stop calling it that, stop using the words; career, job, profession and start focusing on the future, making a difference, and the mission at hand. Think of the challenges that must be met and why your work work is so important to our civilization and society. Think beyond the norm, think about making a difference and why what you are doing must be done to the best of your ability.

Stop preventing that JOB from becoming somehow something you must do, and turn it into something you really want to do. Look at it this way, if you did not get paid; would you still do what you are doing now? If so, you have arrived, if not, you need to adjust your attitude or find something more meaningful to do. Please consider all this. …

Omega 3 EPA: Nature's Very Own Anti-depressant

Since Dr Malcolm Peet, a consultant psychiatrist at Sheffield swallow court hospital released his findings about the effects of Ethyl Epa and its effects on people suffering from depression and low moods, many other studies have been performed using Ethyl Epa to help treat depression and related disorders . The vast majority of the studies that have been performed consistently confirmed that Ethyl Epa, a natural substance found in omega 3 fish oil, helps alleviate depression and low moods.

The idea that high grade omega 3 EPA could have been used to help combat depression and other related disorders came from the late Dr Horribin, who as early as the 1970s was a pioneer in lipid research involving the brain and central nervous system. Since the findings at Sheffield, studies have been conducted round the world, Harvard university 1999, London Hammersmith hospital 2001 and Israel Ben Gurion University 2002 to name but a few.

EPA As Part Of A Healthy Diet

EPA is part of the Omega 3 chain of ecosanoids and is most commonly found in fatty fish such as fresh salmon, mackerel, pilchards and sardines. Over the past 100 years the diet patterns of most people in the west have shifted dramatically to include far more hydrogenated oils and trans fatty acids (bad fats) this is largely due to the increased consumption of fast food and ready made meals. Even people who think they eat a healthy diet consume way too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3.

Researchers have recently found that a diet high in Tran's fatty acids could affect the mood stabilizing hormones within the brain, this is thought to be due to the planned fats slowing down the messaging system within the brain, should this happen then the onset of depression could occurrence.

How Does EPA Work?

While the benefits of high grade EPA have been well documented, the scientific community still does not know exactly how EPA works on the brain, one theory released by Dr Basant Puri is that it eases the passage of the signals over the tiny gaps in the brain called synapses. Another theory was that the high grade Epa actually worked similar to lithium and had anti depressant properties of its own.

Until recently it was generally accepted in the medical community that once a human reached maturity that the adult brain could not grow anymore, in a recent paper just released by Dr Puri his findings show other wise. Dr Puri scanned a 21 year patient before treating him with high grade Pure Epa, after the course of treatment he rescanned the young man only to find that the gray matter of the brain had increased in size.

Omega 3 EPA And The Body

As well as EPA being very good for helping to balance mood it has other well documented symptoms on the body, these included: –

o Blood thinning properties

o Decrease risk of heart attack

o Decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque

o …
