NCAA: College survey finds support for Power 5 breakaway

Three-fourths of college athletics leaders believe the NCAA governing structure needs major, immediate reform, and more than half of Power 5 college administrators support breaking away from NCAA Division I to form a fourth division solely made up of the division’s top 65 schools.

That’s according to a sweeping survey of college leaders this summer conducted by the Knight Commission, a longstanding independent group that promotes reforms that support the educational mission of college sports. The commission’s survey, conducted from June 18 to July 14, produced a 180-page report that provides a window into the thinking of NCAA leadership.

Those surveyed included more than 350 college presidents, conference commissioners, athletic directors, college athlete leaders and institutionally designated faculty athletics representatives and senior woman administrators. Data for the survey’s respondent base are accurate within a 5% margin with a 95% confidence level, the commission said during a presentation Tuesday revealing the data.

Overall satisfaction with current NCAA Division I governance

Overall, the survey showed a strong attitude toward governance reform, low satisfaction with inequalities in college athletics finances and, maybe most notably, an openness for a radical restructuring of Division I’s competition levels, such as creating a new division for Power 5 programs in all sports except basketball, or separating Football Bowl Subdivision football from the NCAA.

Likelihood to support implementing proposed potential change

In fact, 61% of Power 5 administrators say they are more likely to support creating a fourth division of the NCAA that includes only Power 5 programs. Just 15% of Power 5 administrators say they are against such, with 24% being neutral. All other segments of Division I—Group of Five, FCS and non–football playing members—are categorically opposed to the Power 5 breaking away, the survey found.

Meanwhile, 44% of leaders support keeping together FBS programs but separating FBS football from the NCAA, while 31% are against that. One-quarter of respondents answered that they are neutral or undetermined.

Survey results around future strategies for Division I

A whopping 74% of respondents want to see governance structure at the NCAA change, with just 7% disagreeing with that. Despite a weighted model that gives them more power, Power 5 administrators, at 42%, are most dissatisfied with the NCAA governance compared to any other group. In one of the most unifying topics, 77% of leaders say March Madness should not undergo any changes.

As for college athletics spending, 67% of respondents seek an antitrust exemption in order to reduce athletics costs, and 62% would agree to capping sports budgets, such as coaching salaries. In fact, three out of four school presidents agree with both of those models of decreasing sports spending.

The latest string of upsets in college football shook up the AP Top 25, as Florida and Miami both tumbled six positions in the Week 7 poll.

The downward movement from those two teams, combined with the drops for Oklahoma, Texas and LSU in the last few weeks, has allowed some unfamiliar faces to climb into the top 10.

North Carolina turned out to be the biggest beneficiary of Saturday’s upsets by boosting three spots to No. 5. Oklahoma State and Cincinnati also gained three positions on their way up to No. 7 and No. 8, respectively.

If those programs come out on top Saturday, they could gain more ground since Alabama and Georgia are scheduled to meet in what could be the first of many top-five showdowns across the nation this season.

Analysis

Clemson, Alabama and Georgia will spend one more week in the top three, but one of those positions is expected to change hands at the weekend.

The Crimson Tide and Bulldogs meet Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium for what could be an early preview of the SEC Championship Game.

Alabama fended off its first ranked challenger two weeks ago and followed up that win over Texas A&M with a shootout victory over Ole Miss.

The Crimson Tide need to be sharper on defense to remain near the top of the rankings, though. They allowed 48 points and 647 total yards to Ole Miss.

The good news for Alabama is its offense seems to be clicking with Mac Jones replacing Tua Tagovailoa under center.

Nick Saban’s side put up 153 points in its first three games. Georgia has not scored at the same level, but it does own a 108-37 advantage over its opponents.

North Carolina was the only ranked team in the same scoring range as Alabama in Week 6, after it lit up the Virginia Tech defense for 56 points.

The Tar Heels vaulted from No. 8 to No. 5 over Ohio State, who has yet to take the field. Three of the top 15 teams that have not played yet did not move at all from Week 6 to Week 7.

When the season ends, the Tar Heels likely won’t be as strong as the potential Big Ten champion, but they deserve credit for what they have accomplished in Mack Brown’s second season back.

North Carolina should remain in the top five until the Buckeyes touch the gridiron for the first time since it has a fairly easy schedule in the

College football scores, NCAA top 25 rankings, Week 6: No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 8 UNC hold off feisty opponents

Though No. 1 Clemson’s game against No. 7 Miami was the national headliner on Saturday, a pair of other top-10 ACC teams were in action, and both overcame tests before holding on to win as No. 5 Notre Dame beat Florida State 42-26 and No. 8 North Carolina outlasted No. 19 Virginia Tech 56-45. Both the Fighting Irish and Tar Heels will be candidates to move up in the polls after No. 4 Florida lost to No. 21 Texas A&M.

After two weeks off due to a game wiped out by a COVID-19 outbreak followed by a scheduled bye, Notre Dame hoped to pick up where it left off in a 52-0 throttling of South Florida on Sept. 19. But a Florida State team starting its third quarterback of the season in Jordan Travis provided some resistance. Ultimately, Notre Dame’s offense was too much for the Seminoles as the Fighting Irish racked up 554 yards, including 353 on the ground.

The Tar Heels also found their stride offensively as they finished with 656 total yards, including 399 on the ground. It remains to be seen whether either team can hang with Clemson, but the Fighting Irish and Tar Heels are now alone with the Tigers as the last unbeaten teams in the ACC after another wild day of college football.

No. 7 Miami travels to face No. 1 Clemson in Death Valley on Saturday in a top-10 battle sure to have implications on the ACC title and College Football Playoff races. There wasn’t much hype for the Tigers-Hurricanes game when the schedule was released in the preseason, but the impressive start by UM has made this early-season showdown one of the biggest games of the year — not only in the ACC but in all of college football.

After all, the ACC doesn’t get a ton of matchups between teams ranked in the top 10. This is the first such game since the 2017 ACC Championship Game when Clemson beat Miami 38-3, and only the 17th meeting between AP top 10 teams in the ACC in the league’s history.

That adds an extra layer of intrigue to the perception portion of Saturday night’s events, as the quality not only of Clemson, the five-time ACC champs, and Miami, the most exciting 2020 contender so far, will carry implications that extend to the entire league.

There’s going to be a ton of talent on the field in Clemson with much of the nation’s eyes on the game. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect in this top-10 showdown as well as make some expert picks both straight up and against the spread.

Clemson: The events of last Saturday had so much for college football fans to digest that Clemson’s win against Virginia likely appeared routine and without worry or concern. After all, when eight ranked teams lose in the same day, there’s enough carnage around the country to focus on without getting distracted by a 41-23 Tigers victory. But in that game, we saw evidence of a Clemson team that is still very much rounding into form and far from the final product that we expect will be competing for a national championship. The defensive line is down multiple starters and the offense is still waiting for wide receivers not named Amari Rodgers to step up and help fill the absences of Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross. It wouldn’t be a big deal most years, as Clemson has been known to plan its season to peak around championship time in December and January, but most years don’t feature a top-10 opponent in the fourth game of the season. The Tigers are being tested with a championship-like setting weeks before they are used to hitting that championship gear, and the results will be telling for what’s ahead — particularly with a date against Notre Dame in South Bend coming up in early November.

Miami: How will Miami stand up against the champs? The Hurricanes offense has thrived against UAB, Louisville and Florida State, but going head-to-head against Clemson’s talented front and the best defensive coordinator in football in Brent Venables is going to be a tough test for Rhett

College football scores, NCAA top 25 rankings, schedule, games today: No. 5 Notre Dame meets Florida State

Five of the seven top-10 teams in action on Saturday will be battling ranked foes as the college football season rolls on with some crucial conference matchups dotting the Week 6 slate. In total, 16 of the 19 ranked teams who have started their seasons will be in action during what figures to be another hectic day in the sport. The headliners are No. 1 Miami hosting No. 7 Clemson in the evening and No. 3 Georgia hosting No. 14 Tennessee for the SEC on CBS Game of the Week in the afternoon.

But the morning wave of games is loaded, too. No. 4 Florida plays at No. 21 Texas A&M in a critical game for a pair of third-year coaches looking to make a mark on the national scene. The ACC will also have a pair of ranked teams dueling in the early time slot as No. 8 North Carolina hosts No. 19 Virginia Tech in the toughest test yet for both teams.

There’s a lot to cover with those games and everything in between. CBS Sports will be here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the day. All times Eastern

Alabama vs. Ole Miss score: Live game updates, college football scores, NCAA highlights, full coverage

No. 3 Alabama is traveling to Ole Miss on Saturday evening with a highly-anticipated coaching matchup between Nick Saban and his former offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin taking center stage. Nevermind that Saban improved to 20-0 all-time against his former assistants last week, Saban and Kiffin going head to head has already created fireworks ahead of the game.

The Crimson Tide are coming off of a blowout over Texas A&M, while the Rebels knocked off Kentucky last week. Keep an eye on the offenses in what should be a shootout as long as the weather cooperates. Alabama quarterback Mac Jones has been money finding receivers DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle and John Metchie III. That has allowed running back Najee Harris to get involved in the offense in a variety of ways, making this one of the most versatile units in the country. Kiffin has some weapons at his disposal, too. Quarterback Matt Corral has a rocket arm, and running back Jerrion Ealy is the best running back whose name you probably don’t know.

Clemson vs. Miami score: Live game updates, college football scores, NCAA highlights, full coverage

No. 1 Clemson will face a rare early-season test with No. 7 Miami coming to Death Valley in one of the most high-profile games not only of the season but in ACC football history. In the 66-year history of the league, there have only been 16 games between top 10 teams in the AP Top 25. The Hurricanes’ early-season surge with D’Eriq King leading a revamped offense has made this Saturday night special the 17th, and Miami fans hope this unusual set of circumstances might produce the most unusual result: Clemson losing an ACC game.

The Tigers have won 40 of their 42 ACC regular-season games since the start of the 2015 campaign, including a clean sweep of every ranked foe that’s stood in its way. Clemson does as good a job as anyone in the country of stepping up to the challenge in these big-time games, winning in ways that affirm their status as the class of the conference. Miami strives to be that kind of program in the ACC, and a road win against the champs would go a long way to start changing its reputation of failing to meet expectations.

CBS Sports will be with you the entire way updating this story with the latest from Miami at Clemson on Saturday night. Keep it locked here for live updates, highlights and more throughout the game.

Pittsburgh vs Boston College Live Online Football 2020 Free .Each Friday, the Sports Illustrated-AllGators staff will asdprovide predictions and pre-game analysis before the Florida Gators take on their weekly opponent.

We have decided to tally prediction records as the season goes on. These are purely based on Gators’ win/loss prediasdctioasdsadns, and not factoring in the spread. With that, each of our contributors has gotten off to an undefeated start for the 2020 season.

This week, Florida heads to College Station, Texas this week for its first ranked matchup of the season. The No. asd4 Gators will take on the No. 21 Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday at noon, on ESPN. Despite being the toughest opponent of the year thus far, and going on the road, our staff is once again confident that the Gators will exit with a victory.rturt

I think this game will be closer than some folks are letting on.

For one, a win against No. 4 Florida would be a massive tone-setter for Jimbo Fisher in his third year at Texas A&M, after what’s been a disappointing first two years of his 10-year, $75 million, fully guaranteasded contract. Against what’s been a struggling defense to put it lightly, the Aggies are capable of putting up points.

Not as many as Florida, though. A&M’s defense has allowed nearly 10.5 yards per passing attempt as quarterbacks are completing 71.4% of their passes. Gators quarterback Kyle Trask and his expansive arsenal of weapons have to be licking their chops. Pick your poison: Kyle Pitts asdand/or Kadarius Toney have themselves a big day, depending on how much attention is put on Pitts by the Aggies’ defense.rsdtu

Otherwise, Kyle Trask and Co. should have a huge day, huge enough to win a big game on the road. TAMU is young in the secondary and won’t be able to keep up with Kyle Pitts, Kadarius Toney, and Trevon Grimes all game long. I’m predicting a Big-12 style loss for the former Big-12 team.rtutrsd

Georgia vs. Tennessee score: Live game updates, college football scores, NCAA highlights, full coverage

No. 3 Georgia hosts No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday in an SEC on CBS Game of the Week that also serves as a key game in the league’s SEC East race. The presumed favorite in the division, Georgia, takes on a Tennessee team that boasts an eight-game winning streak but is still hoping to make a statement nationally. That streak is the longest the Volunteers have put together since winning 11 games over the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Of course, that streak has come with wins over South Carolina (twice), Missouri (twice), Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Indiana and UAB. Some respectable wins, sure, but nothing that’s going to move the needle nationally. What matters more is how Tennessee fares against teams like Georgia, and that hasn’t gone well lately for the Vols. Georgia has won the last three meetings and eight of the last 10. The most recent three Dawgs wins have come by an average of 32 points each. Can the Vols pick up the first signature win of the Jeremy Pruitt era, or will Georgia prove that there’s still a lot of room between the two programs?

Watch No. 3 Georgia vs. No. 14 Texas A&M at 3:30 p.m. ET live on CBS and streaming for free on CBSSports.com and the CBS Sports App. We will be with you the entire way updating this story with the latest from the game. Keep it locked here for live updates, highlights and more throughout the game.
