If you are traveling to Ireland, then you will no doubt be aware of the rich literary tradition the country has. Almost everywhere you go there are references to Irish writers, such as James Joyce, Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw. And even today, somehow the Irish seem to be able to tell a story better than just about anyone else – whether it be in written form, or just through a chat in the pub.
So, if a trip to The Emerald Isle is on the agenda, then it is almost compulsory to take some books set in Ireland to read on your travels. But what should you read if Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ is not quite your cup of tea? Here’s a range of novels that will take you the length and breadth of Ireland, and give you a real taste of life over the years in this country filled with passion and history.
‘The Mammy’ by Brendan O’Carroll
If you want to know more about Dublin in the 1960’s, then this story of widow Agnes Browne and her seven children will do it. This is working-class Ireland with all its squalor, laughter and alcoholic fathers, and the best news is that the book is the first of a trilogy. The next time you are approached by a cheeky Dublin lad (and there are many!), you may find yourself thinking back to Agnes and her brood.
‘Little Criminals’ by Gene Kerrigan
And now to Dublin in contemporary times. The country has had its economic miracle and everyone is an entrepreneur, even the criminals. Frankie Crowe has a scheme to make himself some money, planning to kidnap a wealthy banker and set himself up for life. While this could be just a cops and robbers novel, Kerrigan does much to portray the underbelly of Dublin life, and the social changes that have taken place over recent years.
‘Juno and Juliet’ by Julian Gough
If you decide to head to Galway (and I’d highly encourage you to do so), then this novel is one of the few that is set there. This story of identical twins during their first year at university sees them adjusting to life in the city, drinking in the bars and attending classes from time to time. It’s a coming of age story in which Galway itself is one of the main characters.
‘The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty’ by Sebastian Barry
The tensions surrounding the Irish struggle for independence lie at the heart of this novel set in the town of Sligo in Ireland’s north-west. Unable to find work, Eneas joins the British-led police force the Royal Irish Constabulary, and in the process labels himself a traitor. As a marked man he goes on the run, and while the novel follows Eneas from country to country, he sneaks back to Sligo when he can. A compelling look at 20th Century Ireland, through a character who has become a victim of his country’s fight to exist.

Have you been racking your brain around the idea of where to start or what your next step in your music career is? What about always wondering what tools you will need to achieve a successful career in the music industry? I had these same questions when I first started pursuing my career in music as well as a few years after. I did not know where to start or what to do next. I just knew I needed to start somewhere. Master each of these measures and you will have a significant advantage over your competition and you will watch your music career flourish by leaps and bound.
Step your emotions and feelings up in your life and your music. And I mean everything involving music or related to music. Because basically anything music related is filled with feelings and emotions that soak into your music naturally. There is never a time when you are playing music and not putting any feelings into what you are playing. But have you looked at it from a different perspective? If you put emotion and feelings into your music, it will be so much more personal to you. Then over time will transform into a piece of you and also serve as an extension of yourself throughout time.
Nowadays with any person, you must have a sharp mind to live in this world. But that is truer with a musician or individual wanting to venture into the music industry at this day and age. Mastering this step alone, will give you an enormous advantage over your competition, simply because it is such an important element in this industry. Having a sharp mind that is programmed to succeed no matter what is thrown at it, is key. You must be not only strong minded but also calm of mind, so you can think straight and clear while still moving forward without distractions.
Calming your mind will help you make better decisions in all aspects of the music industry. You will have many distractions in your music career. Trust me when I say a clear mind will help get you past every distraction. Just ask yourself “what is more important for my music career?” And guess what, whatever the answer is, do it, and you will have success in this industry. It is that simple.
Work Attracts Success:
Now if you thought you were attracted to music, let me tell you what has a deeper love. Success and work. But the funny thing is, work could care less about success. Although it is an entirely different story when it comes to the feelings success has towards work. Success loves work. Success cannot live a day without work. Success cannot go anywhere without work. Success is only attracted to work, nothing else. But success only comes running when there is a lot of hard and effective work being done.…
As the country of law suits, United States seems to have the most lawyers. It almost seems too easy to become a lawyer in America since there are too many around and the common perception that people have about what lawyers do is just arguing very well. But actually, earning the right to practice law and the responsibilities they carry are very difficult things to do.
In United States, law is taught at law schools. Law schools in America are graduate schools where a BA degree, most often Bachelor Degree of Laws, is a perquisite for admission. Though most of the law schools are part of a University, few of the law schools are independent institutions. The degree received upon graduation is a J.D. (Juris Doctor) a Ph.D is not available for the study of law because the degree in law does not require the submission of a full dissertation based on original research. There are other post doctorate degrees such as LL.M, the Legum Magister, or the S.J.D., the Scientiae Juridcae Doctor for those who are interested in studying and receiving credentials in a specific area of law. After going through an internship at a firm to earn experience, the lawyer can take his or her own stand.
The lawyers have many responsibilities regarding law. They not only practice oral arguments in courts but they must research, write, counsel and give legal advice to others. The oral argument is practiced in courts where a lawyer represents their client. Often times, the lawyer must brief a court in writing on the issue in the case before it can be orally argued. The argument is based on the law so the lawyer must do research where the lawyer looks for relevant facts and law and prepare for an oral argument accordingly. During the research, the lawyer must maintain a good relationship with the client and through that, the lawyer will discover facts, clarify what the client wants to accomplish and their expectations and start developing claims or defenses.
Aside from what they do in court rooms, the lawyers give legal advice to people where a lawyer gives advice to their clients about what action they must take. The lawyers also protect intellectual properties such as filing patents, trademarks, and industrial designs. The lawyers negotiate and draft contracts between the buyers and sellers as well as settling a case with two parties. In some places, the lawyers carry out the intent of the deceased, where the lawyer help out people to write wills and trusts and the lawyer will ensure the efficient disposition of a person’s property after their death.
The lawyers carry a lot of names. A person learned in the law, an attorney, counsel or solicitor, or a person licensed to practice the law. The lawyer must abide the law but sometimes they must use the law against the rightful to defend their clients. Though it is a lawful practice, it is not a pleasant sight to see. But in …
John Thompson is best known as the former basketball coach for the Georgetown University Hoyas. After a six year stint as a Washington D.C. high school basketball coach Mr. Thompson took over head coaching duties at Georgetown in 1972 and made a 27 year career at the institution of higher learning.
Chief amongst his numerous accomplishments is the distinction of being the first African American head coach to win a national championship in in any major American college sport. In 1984 Coach Thompson successfully coached the Hoyas to a NCAA championship with an 84-75 win over a very talented University of Houston squad. The University of Houston team at the time garnered the nickname Phi Slama Jama for their explosive fast break play and acrobatics around the rim. The two most prominent players from the highly athletic squad are hall of famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.
Thompson was born in September of 1941 and grew up in Washington D.C. where he excelled as a star center for Archbishop Carroll High School. After playing in three straight city championship games from 1958-1960 the man who would eventually grow into a 6’10” 270 frame moved 400 miles from home to attend Providence College in Rhode Island. At the time of his college graduation in 1964 John Thompson left Providence College as the all-time leader for the school in points and field goal percentage. For his efforts he was recognized accordingly as an All-America basketball player his senior year.
After playing two seasons in the NBA and picking up two NBA championships in 1965 and 1966 as a backup center for hall of famer Bill Russell with the Boston Celtics Thompson put his playing days behind him while still in his mid 20s and shifted career paths to pursue his true calling of being a basketball coach. John returned to Washington D.C. where his successful coaching record of 122-28 with St. Anthony High School garnered the attention of Georgetown University who hired him as their head coach despite his having no previous college coaching experience.
At the age of 30 Coach John Thompson took over a Georgetown basketball program that had gone 3-23 the year before his arrival. Thompson quickly turned the team around and over his 27 years at the helm posted an impressive winning percentage where he won more than 71 percent of his games.
When John Thompson stepped down from his head coaching post on January 8, 1999 he retired from the game mid-season and only four wins shy of reaching the 600 win mark for his career. Thompson went on record as siting issues with his marriage as being behind his unexpectedly early retirement. Later that same year on October 1, 1999 John Thompson was inducted into the basketball hall of fame.…
Although you will enjoy the experience tremendously, going to college will cost you at least an arm and possibly a leg. If you accept the fact early on that you need extra funds to pay for this investment, then you'll be motivated to start looking for financial assistance opportunities.
Here are the five best ways to pay for college.
Scholarships are a prospective college student's primary aid objective. Apply for as many scholarships as you can, because if you just get one, you'll end up saving thousands of dollars on your college costs. Scholarships do not have to be paid back. You may have to fulfill certain requirements, but you are not going to make any repayments on your scholarship awards. Scholarships can be need or performance-based. There are scholarships out there that cater to every single imaginable identity, from football players to cancer survivors to Mormons. Put in the time to find scholarships that you are eligible for, and apply for as many as possible.
Grants are the next best thing to a scholarship. Grants do not need to be repaid. You can receive thousands of grant dollars from your university as well as local, state and federal governments. Make sure that you have filled out all the grant applications you qualify for. Get your FAFSA turned in early every year. The more free money you get, the less you have to pay back. So get on the ball and start looking for grants.
Loans are not as appealing as scholarships and grants, but they can come in very handy. If you get a student loan, you need to understand what you are getting yourself into. Subsidized loans are awarded based on financial need. They do not accrue interest while you are in school. Unsubsidized loans are not need based. When you take out an unsubsidized loan, you will accrue interest while you are in school. Be sure that you go to your loan exit review, so that you understand the terms of your repayment obligations once you graduate.
Get a job. Pay as you go. Invest as you invest. If you have money coming in, you'll be more secure during and after your college experience.
You can always hit up your family members for money. Be honest with each other. Know what to expect and what's expected. Have all the facts out on the table so that you can plan accordingly.
If you prepare for the financial impact of college, you'll be in a better position once you graduate. Do not absorb anything. Get the answers to your financial questions ahead of time, and remember to apply for aid at least one year before you a …
Do you want to be more excited about your work? Instead, are you dissatisfied with your job and feel stuck and/or frustrated? Often, people are unable to move forward because they don’t know what they want to change. That’s where the ADESA model comes in. The ADESA Model can help you build skills and experiences that will ensure your long term career success and satisfaction. This model offers a specialized process that will help you
* Discover and make use of your natural talents, skills, and strengths
* Find top interests and career motivations
* Make sound career decisions
* Change your career field, workplace, or job
* Transition to self-employment
Through the career transition process using this model, you will also become more aware of your own answers to some pretty big questions such as:
Who are you?
Why do you want to work?
What do you want to do?
Where do you want to do it?
Introducing the ADESA Model:Assess, Differentiate, Explore, Scribe, Achieve
How it works, step by step:
Step 1: Assess: Find clarity regarding your core needs, talents, interests, and motivations.
This essentially means you need to take the time to get to know yourself, get a handle on what you’re good at, what you like to do, and what you really want. Assessments give you a way to organize, identify patterns, and discuss what you know about yourself, so you can relate this self-awareness to workplace possibilities. While these benefits are extremely useful in the career transition process, it’s important to emphasize that career assessments do not tell you what to do or be when you grow up.
There are a wide range of career assessments available to help you clarify what’s most important. To get the most out of career assessments, you may want to consider working with a professional career services provider. Good career service providers are qualified to administer a full range of career assessments to help you organize and discuss what you really want and find important for your next career decision.
Step 2: Differentiate: Create demand for what you offer that’s remarkable and unique.
This means you need to take the time to develop a clear understanding about all that you offer. You have natural talents and developed strengths that serve you well in your work. The question is how aware are you these attributes? It’s important for you to be able to speak with ease about the remarkable qualities you can bring to a new work experience.
To begin the work of identifying these qualities, ask people you know to tell you a story of a time they’ve seen you at your best. Review all the examples you receive from your friends and colleagues. Consider what themes emerge. Pick the example you like the best, and practice talking out loud about what that experience was like for you. You may wish to use these three questions as a guide:
What was the Challenge you faced? What Action did you …
