SEARCH INSIDE YOURSELF, Increase Productivity, Creativity and Happiness by Chade-Meng Tan

Chade-Meng Tan is a Google engineer who with the assistance of some Zen Masters and some friends, devised an extraordinary mental program: Search Inside Yourself. Chade’s work at Google has been science-based, developing the incredible programs that go on inside Google headquarters. Google has long been at the forefront of creativity, thinking of new ways to do things. This easy-going, unpressured work-environment has led to many of the innovations from Google.

Daniel Goleman the author of Emotional Intelligence went to Google headquarters to give a talk on that subject. He was surprised that so many engineers and technical people turned up to listen to his talk. Chade saw that at the heart of emotional intelligence was knowing yourself. And the best way to know yourself — what goes on inside your head — is through mindfulness meditation.

Google executives approved of this development, and it has become a regular part of the Google culture. Chade wanted the public to experience the benefits of this course, and so with help from some other experienced meditators, developed the program explained in this book.

Chade became interested in meditation after reading about tests that revealed all the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of meditation. He decided that, with the approval of his Google leaders, to introduce a method of releasing the mind from artificial restraints.

The basis of this program is Mindfulness Meditation.

Even if you just read this book, you would learn a lot of useful mental techniques, but by following the Mindfulness Program, you will develop your mental skills, and at the same time, lay a foundation of calmness, objectivity, and inner knowledge.

Chade writes: “Meditation, at its simplest, is the training of attention. With enough meditative training, one’s attention can become unwaveringly calm and focused. With that enhanced quality of attention, one’s mind can easily, and for extended periods, become highly relaxed and alert at the same time. With that combination of relaxation and alertness, three wonderful qualities of mind naturally emerge: calmness, clarity, and happiness.”

You will soon see the benefits of following this practice. Chade gives lots of simplified ways of doing the meditation, which can be done sitting, walking, or listening. You can start by just doing a one-breath meditation each day. As simple as that.

This book contains a lot of little cartoon drawings related to the text. I found them a bit distracting, and not particularly useful, but someone else may find them amusing. Don’t let them put you off the program.

All in all the book is a great introduction to mindfulness meditation, an elementary, well-explained course in a single book.

Search Inside Yourself, has been taught at Google headquarters for the past eight years. No wonder they never run out of new ideas.…

Fit Your Ideal Job Into Your Ideal Life

Knowing what you want from a job or career is not enough.

Yesterday I talked with a woman, Dawn, who is rapidly approaching burn out on her job and career. She considers leaving her job every few years, wanting more, but doesn’t take any action because she is afraid she doesn’t know what she wants. As we talked, it became clear that Dawn does know what she wants. Five years ago, she decided she wanted to have children. She wanted a house and family and a lifestyle that revolved around that. She was working at a job that paid her well, enabling her to save money for a house. The company also was very supportive of working mothers, and offered great maternity benefits and childcare. While she hated what she did at her job, these other elements made it worth it for her to stay. Instead of leaving, Dawn looked for creative ways to make the job bearable. She volunteered for new projects, and ultimately transferred to another department.

Today, Dawn is a working mom with a house, who loves her family. She also very clearly is burning out on her job and career. Now she is truly ready to find work she loves. As we talked, she was angry with herself for staying so long. But the truth is she understood that a job, a career, needs to fit into your life, not define it. Five years ago, staying allowed her to pursue other dreams for her life, so staying was a good option for her. Her life has a different form today than five years ago. Today, leaving is the good option. Today she is eager and ready to unearth what type of work would feel great doing. She is ready to move forward toward a job and career she loves.

It is important to know what you want from your life, what is important to you over all. Then choose a job and career that support your dreams and goals for your life. If you’re not sure what that is, this exercise can help. My favorite exercise, the Ideal Day Exercise*, is one that allows to you dream about what you truly want from your life, today. Let’s take a look at it now.

Take a moment to imagine your life in 1 to 5 years from today. Imagine what an ideal day in your life at that time will be like. Where are you? What are you doing? How do you feel? Who are you spending your time with? Imagine your day from the moment you wake up all the way through the moment you drift off to sleep at night. Imagine this ideal day in detail – what does it look like? What does it smell like? What sounds do you hear?

Now, write it all down. Take special note of anything that surprises you.

(Note: I believe you receive maximum benefit from this by being very specific. However, I have had clients approach this …

Hospice Nursing: An Overview of Hospice Nursing As a Career Choice

What Hospice Provides:

The concept of Hospice is to give care, comfort, support, and medical treatments to patients for their end of life care. Generally a Hospice patient stays in their own home or their caregivers place of residence. Sometimes treatment for the patient may need a move to a long-term care facility or hospital. The comfort and care given by the Hospice staff centers on quality treatments, pain management and dignity in the patient's last days. A variety of resources are also available for the family before, during, and after the passing of their loved one.

Education Required:

Prior to employment as a Hospice Nurse, completion of a Registered Nursing program is required, either an ASN (Associate Degree in Nursing) or BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing). Individuals interested in Hospice must have a minimum two years as an RN in a Hospice based nursing environment, then a skill exam must be taken and passed. The proficiency exam is a competency certification test required by the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses. Finally, along with an ASN or BSN, National Certification exam, the nurse will receive specialized training specific to Hospice Care. The nurse will take courses in pain and symptom management; end-stage disease processes; psychological and spiritual care for the patient and family. Additional courses that are given are ethical and legal issues, and communication strategies dealing with patients, families, and other Hospice Team Members.

Job Description:

Hospice Nurses essentially do the same duties as other nurses. The exception to this type of nurse is traveling, this may include the hospital, long-term care facility, patients home, or caregivers home. Hospice Nurses are the eyes and ears for the interdisciplinary team they are part of. Physicians, Social Workers, Counselors, Pharmacists, Medical Equipment Suppliers, Spiritual Support, as well as the family create a group of team support for the patient and their treatment. A nurse must have a compassionate disposition, caring, and patience to make sure end of life care is as dignified and comfortable for the patient and family as possible. Choosing a career in Hospice Nursing takes a person who understands and accepts that their job is not to make a person better or rehabilitated, it is to give dignified end of life care. Visits with the patient consist of observing the patient's vital signs and pain level, recording and reporting any new issues, administering medicines if required, and providing overall emotional support to the patient and family. The Hospice Nurse also collaborates with the physician, social workers, nursing case managers, spiritual and psychological providers.

Employment Hospice Choices:

General Nurse : Typically this type of nurse visits the patient within their own home or caregivers place of residence. Some patients may have moved from their home and live in assisted living, long-term care, or a foster care facility.

Palliative Care Nurses : This type of Hospice nursing is typically seen in hospitals, long-term care facilities and rehabilitation centers where there is a longer life expectancy …

So God Made a Wrestler

God looked down on his paradise and was pleased. He looked upon all of the peoples of the earth. He noticed the many sports that athletes participated in. God said, “I need to create the ultimate sport and the ultimate athlete.” So God made a wrestler.

God said, “I need an athlete who is willing to participate in a sport that requires discipline, sacrifice, dedication, hard work, and commitment.” So God made a wrestler.

“I need an athlete who is willing to face another athlete one-on-one in the most physically demanding sport in existence with no one else to help him and yet not be afraid.” So He made a wrestler.

“I need an athlete who can defeat his opponent with strength, power, speed, agility, and technical skills. He needs to be able to endure the toughest six or seven minutes that a person could ever endure in the sporting world.” So God made a wrestler.

God said, “I need person who is willing to get up at 6:00 a.m. so he can run five miles before going to school. I need that same person to attend classes, make it through a demanding two hour wrestling practice, and then still come home and do his homework.” So God made a wrestler.

God had to have someone willing to practice the same move for hours, day after day until he had it perfected. So He made a wrestler.

God said, “I need an athlete who declares as a boy that one day he will be an Olympic champion and never doubts himself.” So God made a wrestler.

“I need an athlete who can lose his final college match making it his only loss during his high school and college career. I need that same athlete to bounce back more determined than ever. I need that athlete to win the Olympic gold medal in a dominating fashion and then go on to become one of the greatest wrestling coaches in collegiate history.” So God made a wrestler.

God said, “I need an athlete who is willing to shoot a million low single legs in his lifetime and perform a leg lace fifty times a day because he knows the value of drilling.” So He made a wrestler.

God had to have someone who could get pinned one week and then defeat that same opponent the following week to win the conference championship because he believed in himself and in his abilities. So God made a wrestler.

God said, “I need an athlete who is willing to work hard for four years and never regret it even though he never makes the varsity team. I need an athlete who will stick with it because he knows it is making him a better person.” So He made a wrestler.

“I need an athlete who is willing to practice three times a day preparing for the NCAA Tournament because his coach thinks that is what is needed to be prepared. I need another of his …

Blame – The Very Fast Way to Destroy Your Career When You Have Been Laid Off

I have been in the recruiting software and HR technology industry for about 14 years and have seen some of the best and worst in most any company and any company's personnel. I myself have been in a few very bad situations with my job on the line and have handled things both very well and very badly, which is what this article is about. I guess it was about 8 years ago now that I almost ended my career with what we will call blame-a-nitus. I was a senior manager within a top Recruiting Software vendor and I had grown very resentful because several of the team that had begun with the company around the same time I had, were being promoted and I was not. In my frustration, I was very vocal and an all around angry person to be around. After all, I was putting in more hours than anyone else, I was on call 24/7, and I was the go to guy for almost anything when it came to getting the job done and turned around on a dime. I thrived on the challenge and knew the company could not afford to lose me. Here in lies the problem and illusion that I think many top people in companies live under. I thought I was irreplaceable and that the angrier I got and the harder I pushed; the company would eventually give in. Boy was I wrong.

In comes Poker time – the big bet.

I guess for about a year, I had become increasingly bitter and it all came to a line in the sand one day when I did not get up in the middle of the night and handle a support call. I had actually thought it was handled and had gone back to bed but none the less the next morning came and there were still problems. I was called into the CTO's office and was asked why I did not help out, I explained I had thought it was handled and then the CTO hit just the right button. I like many of you was and am prideful and put a lot of sweat equity into my work. The CTO told me that the team thought I had let them down and abandoned them when they needed me. Upon hearing that, I walked out of the room, walked for a while, walked back in and told him I did not want the role anymore and that I wanted to take a different role on the sales team the VP of Sales had offered. I told him the money was not worth the stress and the role was not going anywhere. I basically put him to a decision and backed him into a corner. He had two choices in my eyes, make me happy or I am out of here.

Here Comes the Moral of This Story

I did not get any response from him immediately and it was not until about …

IT Career Certification – Doorway To Success

The new entrants in the field of information technology as well as the professionals of the field always try to attain as many certificates of IT as possible. Normally, they go for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification, or they go for the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certificates. However, there is one hurry for the candidates in achieving these certifications. Most of these certificates require some form of experience as a pre-requisite for registration into the programs. As a result, a lot of people who are interested in these certifications do not apply for these certificates and the market becomes deprived of certain talent figures.

Another important point that wants attention is the behavior of other people towards those who wish to attain these certificates. Many times it happens that if a person wants to go for any of the Cisco certificates, many other people discourage him for doing so by saying that you would never be able to attain your desired certifications. Some days back, I witnessed a same incident. A newcomer wrote on a website that he wanted to go for CCNA certification. Within a small fraction of time, many comments were received that were all about his inexperience for doing so. Here, they discouraged him for doing this act.

After viewing these comments, I thought that those people were doing the wrong thing. All of us have to start from some beginners' point in every field of life. The same is true for the field of IT. Therefore, it is very wrong to discourage someone on the basis of inexperience. After all, all of us have no experience at the starting point of our career and I am saying so from my own experience. Even I have to work very hard during the beginning years of my career to attain a proper job and then to get promotions within my job.

In the field of IT, having a certification means having knowledge and this is a lifelong process ie you can always attain knowledge at any level of your career. If you are working in the field of Local Area Network side, do not stop yourself from attaining CCNA. If you are on WAN side, do not refrain yourself from MCSE certification. Similarly if you are a new comer in IT, go for A +, Network +, MCSE or CCNA. The point here is that never prevent yourself from attaining any of the IT certification only because you do not have experience. …

"I Can Only Wear Gold Jewelry" – The Truth About Jewelry Allergies

I can only wear gold jewelry, everything else breaks me out.” How many times did I hear that exact phrase from my mother when I was a child? Every time I would give her jewelry that was her response.

Why does everything but gold break my mother out? Is that statement even true? When I started designing jewelry over ten years ago I decided to find out. I wanted to design jewelry for my mom that she could wear without fear of a breakout. Now I am going to let you in on what I have discovered.

My mother, like many people, develops contact dermatitis when her skin comes in contact with some types of jewelry. Her dermatitis is a result of an allergic reaction to the nickel found in many types of jewelry. Nickel allergies are very common, in fact one out of every seven people are likely to suffer from a nickel allergy. More often, women tend to suffer from nickel allergies than men. Allergy treatment can help with the symptoms of a nickel allergy. Unfortunately once the allergy has developed, a person will remain sensitive to nickel for the rest of their life.

Nickel is found in many types of costume jewelry, especially those that are mass-produced. It may also be found in other everyday items like coins, zippers, eyeglass frames, and cellphones.

So why is my mom allergic to nickel, you may ask. For some reason, which science still does not understand, her body has mistaken nickel (or similar metals like cobalt) as a threat. In response to that threat, her body causes an immune response (aka allergic reaction) to get rid of the threat. This reaction causes her to breakout in an itchy rash. But others could have a more severe reaction to nickel.

Now that I knew what was causing my mother’s breakout, I set out to find out which types of jewelry did not contain nickel.

First I looked at gold jewelry. Generally speaking, yellow gold (above 14 karat) will not cause an allergic reaction. However white gold may. White gold alloys contain nickel and other “white” metals to produce its silver coloring. One out of every nine people will react to the nickel in white gold.

Another form of gold jewelry is gold filled or “GF” jewelry. Gold filled jewelry metal is created when a base metal is coated with a layer of gold. Gold filled differs from gold-plated by the amount of gold applied. The layer used in gold filled jewelry is typically 50 to 100 time thicker that the layer used to coat gold-plated products.

Next I looked at silver jewelry. For those who are nickel sensitive, fine silver and sterling silver are great choices for “white” metals.

Fine silver is by definition 99.9% pure silver. Jewelry is generally not made of fine silver because the metal is extremely soft and does not withstand normal wear and tear well.

Most silver jewelry is made using sterling silver. Sterling silver

It's Never Too Late To Start A Second Career

We had a celebratory lunch yesterday with my parents as my mum is turning 73 on Tuesday. My mum is still healthy albeit it does not hear well even with a hearing aid.

My mum started her second career about a decade ago after having been a housewife almost all her life. In her younger years, before the children came along she was a hair dresser. I remember being the subject of her styling experiments when I was young.

Today, she is back in the hair dressing business. But she no longer stands behind customers styling her hair though she knows the business very well. She is now the 'Pantry Director' a title her much younger collections have lovingly given her. In her 'office' she makes some kick-axx (pardon my language!) Iced lemon tea. And she is so well known for it that many customers of the salon specifically ask for her iced lemon tea when they are there.

She loves her time there and being around much younger collections, most of them young enough to be her grandchildren and she finds pleasure in serving the customers and talking shop with the youngsters.

Being in the salon for six days a week, she gets her daily exercise walking up and down the salon serving customers and being updated on the latest trends. On many occasions we have toyed with the idea that maybe it would be better for her to stop work, but we realized that it is the work that is helping her to stay healthy and have more zest for life.

Too often people do not give themselves second chances, thinking that if they have reached a certain age they should not be working anymore. But for some people it is through working and serving that gives them more meaning in life. For my mum it is her way of feeling financially empowered.

It is never too late to start a second career, or a career for that matter! Life is about constantly learning anyway and if we settle quickly into a state of contentment without any motivation for more, then life has eaten us. We are no longer in charge of our lives.

I am proud of my mother for her path towards financial empowerment. How much longer her career as Pantry Director will last we do not know. But as long as it is keeping her healthy she will be there six days a week.

If you happen to be at the Next Salon at Holland Village (Singapore) do say hello to her. …
